MBB Minute -- Providence, Butler Rally to Pick Up Friday Victories
Second-half scoring runs paved the way for Providence and Butler to gain wins Friday night.
In a first-of-its-kind men’s basketball telecast that featured all-access with the head coaches mic’d up and no commercials, Providence defeated DePaul 71-64 at Wintrust Arena. Holding a 35-34 halftime lead, DePaul (8-9, 1-4) used an 11-0 run to extend its advantage, but Providence (12-6, 3-2) responded with a 22-0 spurt to take the lead for good. Jalen Lindsey paced four PC players in double figures with 18 points. Alpha Diallo added 16 points and nine rebounds. Marin Maric led DePaul with 17 points and seven boards.
At Hinkle Fieldhouse, Butler used a 13-0 run in the second half of a 94-83 comeback win over Marquette. The Bulldogs’ Kelan Martin poured in a career-high 37 points – the highest scoring totalby a Butler player since 1998 – and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Kamar Baldwin had 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Marquette’s Sam Hauser tied his career high with 30 points. It was the 10th 30-point effort by a Golden Eagle this season. Both teams are 3-3 in BIG EAST play. Butler is 13-6 overall while Marquette fell to 12-6.
The three teams at the top of the league standings are in action on Saturday. The day starts with Georgetown at Seton Hall (3-1) on FS1 at noon ET. Creighton (4-1) plays at Xavier on FOX at 2 p.m. and Villanova (3-1) meets St. John’s at Madison Square Garden on FOX Business Network at 8 p.m.
