Marcus Foster Scored 28 Points in an 85-77 Win over Georgetown
MBB Minute -- Creighton, Butler Notch Saturday Wins at Home
Creighton and Butler picked up home wins on a light Saturday league schedule that included only two games. Two more contests are slated for Sunday with Marquette hosting No. 1 Villanova and Seton Hall visiting DePaul with Pirate Angel Delgado eyeing the BIG EAST’s career rebounding record.
Creighton held off Georgetown 85-77 in front of 18,518 fans, the ninth largest crowd in CentryLink Center history. Marcus Foster led the Bluejays (17-5, 7-3) with 28 points and six rebounds. Khyri Thomas added 22 points. The Hoyas (13-8, 3-7) cut a 16-point second-half deficit to one point twice, but were unable to take the lead. Freshman Jahvon Blair scored 21 points and Marcus Derrickson finished with 17 points.
Butler raced to a 19-2 advantage over St. John’s and cruised to a 70-45 victory. The Bulldogs (15-7, 5-4) were led by Kelan Martin’s 19 points and Tyler Wideman’s career-high 11 rebounds. Butler held St. John’s (10-12, 0-10) to 29.1 percent shooting from the floor. Tariq Owens led the Johnnies with 13 points and nine rebounds. The next three games for St. John’s come against opponents ranked in the top 10 – Xavier, Duke and Villanova.
No. 1 Villanova plays at Marquette Sunday on FOX at 1 p.m. ET. The Wildcats (19-1, 6-1) are riding a six-game winning streak. Marquette (13-7, 4-4) knocked off top-ranked Villanova last year 74-72 at home. This season, the Golden Eagles feature the BIG EAST’s top two scorers, Markus Howard (22.1) and Andrew Rowsey (20.1)
In the Seton Hall at DePaul matchup on CBS Sports Network at 4 p.m., the Pirates’ Angel Delgado will be aiming to become the BIG EAST’s all-time rebounder in league games. He has 700 rebounds, one behind Syracuse’s Derrick Coleman (1986-90). Seton Hall (15-5, 4-3) is trying to end a two-game losing skid. DePaul (9-11, 2-6) is coming off a 74-73 win at Georgetown. Max Strus leads the Blue Demons with an 18.3 scoring average.
