Villanova Runners Sweep Track Honors, Marquette Athletes Earn Field Awards For #BIGEASTtrack Weekly Accolades
BIG EAST Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Logan Wetzel, Villanova, So., Middle Distance (Saline, Mich.)
Sophomore Wildcat Logan Wetzel ran the mile in 4:04.08 at the Columbia Challenge, finishing 15th overall out of 45 runners and sixth among collegiate entries. Wetzel’s time tops the BIG EAST leaderboard this season in the event and ranks 31st nationally among Division I runners.
BIG EAST Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Will Eggers, Senior, Marquette, Sr., Multis (St. Paul, Minn.)
Senior Will Eggers put down a heptathlon score in his only tune-up before the BIG EAST Championships next month. Eggers placed third at the Jack Johnson Invite with a score of 4,953 points, a personal best and the No. 3 mark all-time at Marquette. Within the event, he recorded four top-three finishes and registered two PRs in the 60-meter dash and high jump). His point total ranks 42nd in the NCAA so far this season and leads a trio of Marquette athletes in the BIG EAST rankings.
BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner, Villanova, Sr., Middle Distance (Dublin, Ireland)
Villanova senior standout Siofra Cleirigh Buttner ran the 800-meters in 2:04.16 at the Columbia Challenge, placing seventh overall out of 51 runners and was the top collegiate finisher in the race. The six runners who finished ahead of her were all professional/club runners. Her time leads the BIG EAST this season and is fourth in the NCAA this season, third best time this weekend in the event.
BIG EAST Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Maya Marion, Marquette, Sr., Throws (Aurora, Ill.)
Marquette senior Maya Marion set two personal bests at the Jack Johnson Invite. In the shot put, Marion throw a career-best toss with a fifth-place throw of 15.23 meters, a BIG EAST best throw. The distance is the No. 2 indoor mark all-time at Marquette and ranks 59th nationally. Marion also set the second-best throw in the BIG EAST in the weight throw with a PR of 17.18 meters which ranks fifth all-time at Marquette.
Notable Performances
- Marquette’s Alison Parker placed first in the 800-meter run at the Jack Johnson Invite on Saturday beating a field of 25 competitors with a time of 2:15.65. Her time tops the league this season.
- Providence’s Millie Paladino also notched a top BIG EAST time this weekend as she finished third in the mile at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic. Paladino’s time of 4:39.31 ranks fifth in the NCAA this season and was the fourth best time this weekend. Her time was also the top collegiate finish in the event.
- St. John’s thrower Nyla Woods finished third in the weight throw at the Columbia Challenge this weekend with a distance of 19.63 meters. Her throw leads the BIG EAST and 28th in the NCAA. All but one of her attempts finished over 19 meters.
