Marquette’s Markus Howard had a night to remember Wednesday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center when he tied the BIG EAST single game scoring record with 52 points and helped the Golden Eagles beat Providence 95-90 in overtime. In the other BIG EAST contest, Creighton rallied to defeat St. John’s 78-71 in Omaha.
Howard tied the mark of Providence’s MarShon Brooks, who had 52 points (also at the Dunk) against Notre Dame on Feb. 23, 2011. Howard also broke the BIG EAST mark for 3-pointers made in a game by connecting on 11 from beyond the arc. The previous record of 10 was set by Providence’s Donta Wade against Notre Dame on Feb. 23, 2000. Howard’s 32 points in the second half also set league mark, surpassing Villanova’s Kerry Kittles’ record of 28 points set on Feb. 28, 1995 against Boston College.
In the game, Howard shot 17-of-29 from the floor, 11-of-19 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the foul line. He has yet to miss a free throw this season in 45 attempts.
For the Friars, Kyron Cartwright scored a career-high 29 points. Isaiah Jackson added 19 points. PC was without forward Rodney Bullock, who missed the game because of a stomach flu.
At CenturyLink Center, Creighton overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to beat St. John’s. Marcus Foster scored a game-high 25 points. Khyri Thomas contributed 17 points and Martin Krampelj added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Bluejays shot 60.9 percent from the field in the second half.
