MBB Minute – Mullin, Ewing Battle as Coaches Tuesday at MSG
Two of the BIG EAST’s legendary players – St. John’s Chris Mullin and Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing -- battled in some of the most memorable games in BIG EAST history at Madison Square Garden. On Tuesday, they return to MSG to meet as coaches of their alma maters for the first time.
The Hoyas and the Johnnies will tip at 6:30 p.m. on FS1 with two members of the Naismith Hall of Fame leading their teams from the bench. Georgetown is 11-4 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST. St. John’s is 10-6 overall and 0-4 in the league. Last year, both home teams won the regular-season meetings and St. John’s edged Georgetown 74-73 in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament in March.
Two other contests, both involving ranked teams, are part of Tuesday’s schedule.
No. 13 Seton Hall takes its 3-0 BIG EAST record to Marquette for a 9 p.m. tipoff on CBS Sports Network. The Pirates, 14-2 overall, had not started 3-0 in conference play since 1998-99. They have been 4-0 only once, in 1992-93. Marquette (11-5, 2-2) has been led by guard Markus Howard, the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, who averaged 44.5 points in two games last week. Both meetings last year were decided by three points with the home team winning.
No. 25 Creighton (13-3, 3-1) hosts Butler (12-5, 2-2) on FS1 at 8:30 p.m. The Bluejays are coming off a 90-66 win at Georgetown. Forward Martin Krampelj has posted double-doubles in three of the first four BIG EAST contests. Creighton ranks third nationally in scoring, averaging 90.2 ppg. The Bluejays will be Butler’s fourth straight ranked opponent. After beating Villanova, the Bulldogs lost to Xavier and Seton Hall. Kelan Martin, who had 27 points against Seton Hall on Saturday, leads the squad with a 19.8 scoring average.
