Flames, Friars, Hoyas Take #BIGEASTfh Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – After the third weekend of league play, the BIG EAST field hockey awards are spread among three teams. Liberty’s Agueda Moroni has been named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Providence’s Lydia Rice has been selected Defensive Player of the Week and Georgetown’s Ciara Weets has earned Freshman of the Week honors.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Agueda Moroni, Liberty, Sr., F/M (Cordoba, Argentina)
Moroni recorded 15 points in a 2-1 week for the Lady Flames. In a 7-1 win over Temple, she scored two goals and added two assists. In an 8-1 victory against Quinnipiac, Moroni notched her fourth hat trick of the season and had an assist. In a 3-2 loss to No. 21 Wake Forest, she scored her 20th goal of the season, setting a school season record. Moroni leads the BIG EAST with 20 goals and 49 points.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Lydia Rice, Providence, Sr., GK (Carle Place, N.Y.)
Rice posted back-to-back shutouts last week as the Friars recorded a pair of 1-0 victories. Her shutout versus Villanova in overtime was the first of her career against a BIG EAST opponent. She had two saves. In a victory at Massachusetts, Rice notched five saves. She owns a 1.39 goals against average for the year.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Ciara Weets, Georgetown, Fr., GK (Springfield, Va.)
Weets helped the Hoyas topple No. 16 Old Dominion 2-1 in overtime, which was Georgetown’s first victory over a ranked opponent in program history. She saved a penalty stroke and made eight saves against the Monarchs. In a 7-1 victory against Lehigh, Weets played one half of the match and did not allow a goal.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Cecile Pieper, Connecticut, Sr., B, (Hollandsche Rading, Netherlands)
Pieper scored twice in two games last week. She picked up a pair of goals in a 7-0 victory over Temple and scored twice again in a 4-2 loss to No. 3 Maryland. Pieper leads UConn with 14 goals and 34 points.
Cheyenne Sprecher, Connecticut, Fr., GK (Palmyra, Pa.)
Sprecher amassed 12 saves in a 1-1 week for the Huskies. In a 7-0 blanking of Temple, she made three saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season. In a 4-2 loss to No. 3 Maryland, Sprecher made a career-high nine saves.
Izzy Mendez, Providence, Jr., F (Cedar Grove, N.J.)
Providence won both of its games by 1-0 scores and Mendez scored both of the goals. She scored in overtime to lift the Friars past Villanova. At Massachusetts, her tally at 40:52 pushed PC to a road win.
