Georgetown Sweeps #BIGEASTswim Weekly Awards
NEW YORK – Georgetown sophomore Drew Carbone and junior Cristina Barrett claim this week’s BIG EAST swimming and diving Athlete of the Week honors. The Hoyas competed at Towson last weekend, where the men fell against the Tigers and the women lost to Towson and James Madison. Seton Hall men and women defeated Montclair State on the road. The men won by a margin of 134-66, while the women were victorious 141-96. Xavier traveled to Akron for the Akron Invite which also featured Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Denison and Miami (Ohio). All except Akron had a men’s team participate. Both Xavier squads finished fifth overall.
BIG EAST Men’s Athlete of the Week
Drew Carbone, Georgetown, So., Back/IM (Chelmsford, Mass.)
Carbone won a pair of events against Towson. In the 100-yard backstroke he was clocked at 50.85, which is the top time in the conference this season. He also touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:51.51. That time is also best in the BIG EAST and in the top-100 in the nation. Carbone was second in the 200-yard individual medley coming in at 1:56.71. He was also part of the runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay squad that was timed at 3:10.84. Carbone’s split was 47.63.
BIG EAST Women’s Athlete of the Week
Cristina Barrett, Georgetown, Jr., Free (Chatham, N.J.)
Barrett won the only event for the Hoyas versus Towson and James Madison. She was first to the wall in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:19.87. That time puts her first in the league for that event and in the top-100 in the nation. In the 500-yard freestyle, Barrett came in at 5:07.40 which was good for third place overall. Her time in that event is also the best in the BIG EAST.
Notable Performances
Heidi Dickson, Seton Hall, Fr., Free/Fly (Greenwich, N.J.)
Dickson collected three wins in Seton Hall’s victory at Montclair State last weekend. She won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.01 along with the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:15.08. Dickson was also part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay that clocked in at 3:39.12, which set a pool record.
Joe Gibson, Seton Hall, Fr., Fly/IM (Chicago, Ill.)
Gibson led the Pirates with three victories for the men’s side. In the 1000-yard freestyle, he touched first in a pool-record time of 9:46.78. He also won the 100-yard butterfly, coming in at 51.92. Both of those times are second-best in the BIG EAST. With a winning time of 1:34.99, Gibson was part of the pool record-setting 200-yard medley relay team. That time is now the best in the league.
Ben Quon, Xavier, Fr., Free/Back (Gilbert, Ariz.)
Quon was the top finisher for the Musketeers in seven events at the Akron Invite. Individually, he placed ninth in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle with times of 47.31 and 1:43.61, respectively. He was 12
th in the 200-yard IM, coming in at 1:57.19 and 16
th in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.63. Quon was a member of both the 400-yard freestyle (3:06.96) and 400-yard medley (3:27.12) relays that placed fifth. Those are both the top times in the conference so far. He was also part of the 800-yard freestyle relay which went 6:59.90 and finished sixth.
