NEW YORK – Providence’s Abbey Wheeler and Ryan Gallagher have been named BIG EAST Female and Male Athletes of the Week in Cross Country.  Wheeler also has earned national USTFCCCA national honors.  Both finished in second place at the CCSU Mini Meet this past weekend.     
 
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Ryan Gallagher, Providence, So. – Gallagher finished second individually at the CCSU Mini Meet at the Stanley Quarter Park Course, covering the 5K race in 14:53.6.  The sophomore helped the Friars win the 12-team event that included Yale, New Hampshire and American International. 
 
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Abbey Wheeler, Providence, Jr. – Wheeler placed second at the CCSU Mini Meet.  The junior posted a time of 9:48.9 in the 3K race and was honored as the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week.  Wheeler was only beaten by former all-America teammate Brianna Illarda.  The next closest competitor in the race was 19 seconds behind Wheeler.  Providence finished first as a team in the 14-team event.   
 
BIG EAST Notes
The Marquette men's and women's cross country teams participated at the Illini Open last Friday.  The men placed third led by Max McClelland in 17th place, while the women placed fifth paced by Mary Rose Flood’s 10th overall finish.  Flood led a women's team of 10 competitors that all placed in the top-50. Finishing second on the team was Hannah Gorin who was 18th overall.  On the men's side, McClelland finish just in front of Danny Peterson, who came in 20th overall.
