Senior Jaali Winters and No. 10 Creighton look to stay unbeaten in league play
NEW YORK – Another weekend of BIG EAST volleyball is set primarily in the Midwest as Butler, Creighton, DePaul and Xavier host. Providence will host the only two matches on the East Coast, welcoming St. John’s on Friday at 6 p.m. ET and Seton Hall on Sunday at 1 p.m. Villanova visits Xavier on Friday in a match to be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) at 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
Creighton enters the weekend ranked No. 10 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll for a fourth straight week and is the only unbeaten team left in league play. No. 19 Marquette improves to 4-1 after a home win over Xavier on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles moved up one more spot in the AVCA poll after a perfect record last week, improving their highest ranking in program history once again.
Marquette recorded a sweep over visiting Xavier (25-19, 25-14, 25-20) in a midday match on Wednesday. Junior Allie Barber collected a team-high 14 kills while senior Jenna Rosenthal added 12. Sophomore Martha Konovodoff tallied a match-high 13 digs for the Golden Eagles who are now 13-4 overall and 4-1 in BIG EAST play. Xavier (4-12, 2-3 BIG EAST) was led by senior Laura Grossman who had a team-high nine kills along with six digs. Redshirt sophomore Audrey Adams posted six kills in nine attempts for a .667 hitting percentage.
DePaul (4-12, 2-3) collected its second consecutive five-set BIG EAST victory Wednesday evening at home against Butler (25-22, 12-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11). Junior MacKenzie Savage recorded a match-high 25 digs for the Blue Demons, while sophomore teammate Emma Price had a match-high 17 kills in the win. BU moves to 5-12 overall and 2-3 in league matches. Junior Brooke Gregory had a team-high 15 kills, while freshman Elizabeth LaBue totaled a team-high 19 digs for the Bulldogs.
Georgetown (10-7, 3-2) visits Butler at 6 p.m., and Creighton (12-4, 4-0) welcomes Seton Hall (5-13, 0-5) at 8 p.m., for the other two matches on Friday evening. On Saturday, Marquette makes the quick trip along Lake Michigan to DePaul for a match slated to begin at 1 p.m. The Hoyas travel to Xavier and Villanova (10-7, 3-2) makes its way to Indianapolis to take on the Bulldogs, both matches starting at 6 p.m. The Pirates head back east to visit Providence on Sunday at 1 p.m., while St. John’s makes the trip to Omaha to battle the Bluejays an hour later at 2 p.m.
