More Than Halfway Home
BIG EAST women’s soccer play passed the halfway point on Sunday as all 10 teams played their fifth league match of the year. No. 5 Georgetown took advantage of an overtime win against Villanova and Butler falling at St. John’s to create a five-point gap between first and second place. The Bulldogs held onto their spot in second and Villanova in third, but the pack in fourth quadrupled as Providence, Xavier and St. John’s joined DePaul. Creighton inched closer as well with its second BIG EAST win and is just one point shy of the logjam.
 
#5 Georgetown 1, Villanova 0 (OT) 
Caitlin Farrell’s fourth game-winning goal was of the golden variety on Sunday as the senior’s score in the 99
th minute spoiled Villanova’s upset bid over the fifth-ranked Hoyas. Arielle Schechtman made six saves for her ninth shutout of the season, keeping Georgetown unbeaten both overall (12-0-2) and in BIG EAST play (5-0). Hensley Hancuff had eight saves for the Wildcats before surrendering the decisive score. Chloe O’Neill had two shots for VU.

St. John's 2, Butler 1  
The Red Storm moved up into the logjam in fourth place in the BIG EAST standings thanks to two goals by Zsani Kajan. The redshirt-sophomore gave St. John’s a 1-0 lead in the 17
th minute off a penalty kick, before Butler freshman standout Anja Savich scored her seventh of the season from distance to level the score four minutes later. Kajan used some fancy footwork to bury the go-ahead goal in the 57
th, while Red Storm keeper Meredith Reinhardt made a game-saving stop on a Paige Monaghan penalty kick with less than 13 minutes remaining. Reinhardt finished with three saves while Monaghan had four strikes. The Bulldogs maintained their spot in second place.

Providence 1, Marquette 0  
Kayla Steeves served up a corner kick to Katie Day who buried the header in the 72
nd minute to give the host Friars a 1-0 lead which they would hold on to the rest of the way. Shelby Hogan made five saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season, while the goal was Day’s first of the year. Katrina Wetherell had three shots for Marquette, while Maddy Henry made four saves.

Xavier 3, DePaul 2 (2OT) 
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, DePaul and Xavier combined for four second-half goals, with the Musketeers scoring the first two before the Blue Demons responded with a pair in the 72
nd and 76
th. Knotted at 2-2 in the second overtime period, a handball in the box awarded a penalty kick to XU and Samantha Dewey converted for her fourth game-winning goal of the season. The win was XU’s first in program history over DePaul. Madeline Frick and Franny Cerny scored for the Blue Demons, who remain in fourth place in the standings but are now in a four-way tie.

Creighton 2, Seton Hall 1
The Pirates struck just 3:48 into the contest as Alyssa Reszkowski scored her first of the season, but the Bluejays responded by closing the first half with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Katie Sullivan made three saves over the final 45 to keep The Hall off the board and lead Creighton to its second BIG EAST win of the season. Kaira Houser was credited with the game winner, while Kylin Grubb also scored for CU, her third of the year.
