Marquette’s Howard, Providence’s Reeves Take #BIGEASTmbb Honors

NEW YORK – Marquette guard Markus Howard and Providence guard A.J. Reeves have earned the season’s first weekly men’s basketball awards.  Howard, a unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team selection, has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week.  Reeves has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.

BIG EAST Player of the Week
Markus Howard, Marquette, G, Jr. – In a 2-0 week, Howard averaged 26.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists.  In Saturday’s 92-59 win against Bethune-Cookman, the junior guard poured in 37 points, the most points by a Marquette player at a home game in 12 years.  For the Bethune-Cookman contest, Howard shot 7-of-10 from 3-point range and 10-of-11 from the foul line.  Earlier in the week, he had 15 points and eight rebounds in a 67-42 win over UMBC. 

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
A.J. Reeves, Providence, G, Fr.
Reeves averaged 24.0 points in a 1-1 week.  In a 77-67 win against Siena, Reeves set a school record for most points by a freshman playing in his first game with 29 points.  Reeves had 19 points in an 83-80 loss to Wichita State.  For the two week, he shot 73.9 percent from the field and 64.3 percent from 3-point range.
 
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Alpha Diallo, Providence, G, Jr.
Posted two double-doubles in a 1-1 week.  Averaged 21.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a 77-67 victory against Siena and an 83-80 loss to Wichita State.  Shot 57.1 percent from 3-point range.   
Jessie Govan, Georgetown, C, Sr.
In a 2-0 week, averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists.  Had 26 points in an 85-78 win against Central Connecticut State.
Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s, G, Jr.
Averaged 20.5 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals in a 2-0 week.  Shot 56.7 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from beyond the arc. 
Phil Booth, Villanova, G, Sr.
Averaged 20.0 points and 4.5 assists in a 2-0 week, including a 23-point effort in an 86-53 win over Quinnipiac.  Had only one turnover for the two games.
Tyrique Jones, Xavier, F, Jr.
Averaged 18.0 points and 13.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week.  In a 91-85 win over Evansville, had 19 points, 20 rebounds and four blocked shots.  The rebound total was the most by a Xavier player since Feb. 3, 2001.
