MBB Minute -- Seton Hall, Villanova Advance to Title Games in 4-0 Friday
Seton Hall and Villanova moved to the championship games in their respective tournaments on a 4-0 Friday for BIG EAST teams. Butler and Marquette also won.
In late night action at the Wooden Legacy, Seton Hall’s defense was the difference in a 64-54 semifinal win over Hawaii. The Pirates held the Rainbows to 25 points below their scoring average. A 13-2 run in the second half gave the Hall some breathing room. Myles Powell led the offense with 19 points and Michael Nzei added 16 points and six rebounds. Sandro Mamukelashvili continued his strong rebounding work with a team-high nine boards. Seton Hall will play Miami, Fla. for the tournament crown on Sunday at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Villanova got out of the gate quickly against Oklahoma State in the Advocare Invitational and never trailed in a 77-58 victory. The Wildcats connected on a tourney record 16 3-pointers on 40 attempts (.400). Eric Paschall finished with 22 points and Phil Booth added 20 points. Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree had nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Villanova meets No. 14 Florida State Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN for the tournament title.
Butler used a strong defensive effort to beat Florida 61-54 in the fifth-place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Bulldogs limited the Gators to 28.6 percent shooting and overcame a 32-27 halftime deficit to improve to 5-1. Kamar Baldwin made his customary all-around contributions with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists. Paul Jorgensen added 16 points and seven rebounds.
Marquette beat Louisville 77-74 in overtime in the third-place game at the NIT Tip-Off in Brooklyn, N.Y. Markus Howard scored the go-ahead basket in overtime and finished with 21 points. Sam Hauser had 22 points and seven rebounds. Joey Hauser, who finished with 11 points, tied the game in regulation with two free throws with 20 seconds left. The Golden Eagles were clutch from the foul line, making 20-of-23.
Saturday’s three-game schedule does not included any tournament play. At noon ET, DePaul plays at Notre Dame on the WatchESPN App. Georgetown hosts Campbell on FSN. At 4 p.m., Providence plays Iona at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, also on FSN.
