MBB Minute -- Mourning Leads Georgetown, Diallo Helps Providence to Saturday Wins
Trey Mourning, with his father Alonzo present at Capital One Arena, posted his first career double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds in a 93-85 win over visiting Campbell. The Hoya graduate student missed last season recovering from hip surgery. Though a starter this year, Mourning had scored only 29 points until Saturday’s 27-point outburst. Georgetown is 5-1.
Providence built a 48-32 lead by halftime against Iona before closing out the Gaels with a 91-79 win at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Alpha Diallo again led the Friars (4-2) with team highs of 23 points and nine rebounds. Freshman A.J. Reeves added 20 points, including four 3-pointers.
DePaul trailed 39-36 at intermission, but could not get anything going in the second half at Notre Dame and lost 95-70. The Irish shot 62.1 percent from the floor after the break. Max Strus led the Blue Demons (3-1) with 15 points. Jalen Coleman-Landis had 12 points and six rebounds.
Villanova and Seton Hall are the only BIG EAST teams in action on Sunday and both are playing for tournament titles. The Wildcats will meet No. 14 Florida State in the championship game of the Advocare Invitational at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Wildcats have defeated Canisius (83-56) and Oklahoma State (77-58) en route to the final. Villanova has won five straight in-season tournaments.
Later Sunday night, Seton Hall will battle Miami, Fla., in the title game of the Wooden Legacy. ESPN2 will televise at 10:30 p.m. The Pirates have reached the final after victories over Grand Canyon (82-75) and Hawaii (64-54). Myles Powell has scored 59 points in the two wins. He leads the BIG EAST with a 25.8 scoring average.
