St. John's Ponds, Providence's Reeves Take #BIGEASTmbb Honors
NEW YORK – St. John’s guard Shamorie Ponds has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Providence guard A.J. Reeves has been tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Ponds led the Red Storm to the Legends Classic title and Reeves continued his strong offensive contributions in a win against Iona.
BIG EAST teams captured four titles in seven Thanksgiving week tournaments. On Sunday, Seton Hall won the Wooden Legacy and Villanova captured the AdvoCare Invitational. Earlier in the week, Creighton won the Cayman Islands Classic and St. John’s took the Legends Classic.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s, G, Jr. – Ponds was named Most Valuable Player at the Legends Classic by averaging 33.5 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 steals in a pair of victories. In the championship game against VCU, the junior guard also made the winning basket with 4.8 seconds remaining in overtime in an 87-86 victory. Ponds scored 35 points against VCU and 32 points in an 82-79 win against California. For the two games, the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year shot 55.0 percent from the field.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
A.J. Reeves, Providence, G, Fr. -- Reeves wins Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season. He helped the Friars beat Iona 91-79 with 20 points and some accurate shooting. Reeves made 8-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. For the season, he is the BIG EAST’s top scorer among freshmen with a 14.7 average and is shooting 50 percent from 3-point range (15-of-30).
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Ty-Shon Alexander, Creighton, G, So.
Was named MVP of the Cayman Islands Classic after averaging 22.3 points and 3.0 assists. Shot 54.1 percent from the field and 48.3 percent from 3-points range.
Trey Mourning, Georgetown, F, Gr.
Had 27 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Campbell (93-85) for the first double-double of his career.
Sam Hauser, Marquette, G-F, Jr.
Made All-Tournament Team in NIT Tip-Off with averages of 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds. Shot 50 percent from the field and from 3-point range.
Myles Powell, Seton Hall, G, Jr.
Named MOP of Wooden Legacy after averaging 25.3 points. Had 40 points in a first-round win over Grand Canyon (82-75).
Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree, Villanova, F, So.
Won MOP honors at the AdvoCare Invitational, averaging 11.7 points and 11.3 rebounds in three wins. Made 13-of-14 shots from the field.
