No. 9 Creighton wins its 13th straight match
NEW YORK – No. 9 Creighton became the first team to punch its ticket to the 2018 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship presented by Jeep. The Bluejays left no doubt on Friday night as they defeated third-place St. John’s in three sets (25-22, 25-12, 25-22) on the road. Creighton (21-4, 13-0 BIG EAST) extends its winning streak to 13 and has yet to drop a conference match this season. The Red Storm fall to 20-9 and 9-5 in league play.
Creighton senior Jaali Winters had a match-high 13 kills and added six digs, four blocks and three aces on .291 hitting to lead the Bluejays to victory. Junior Madelyn Cole added 32 assists and three aces, and freshman Kari Zumach contributed a match-high six blocks and seven kills on .385 attacking.
St. John’s junior Amanda Sanabia had a match-high 16 digs while becoming the Red Storm’s all-time leader in digs, passing Lena Yee’s mark of 595 digs set in 2007. She is the first player in program history to surpass 600 digs in a season. Sophomore Kayley Wood contributed nine kills, while freshman Efrosini Alexakou collected eight kills and .277 hitting. Junior Erica Di Maulo added 26 assists.
The 2018 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship will take place from Nov. 23 – 24 in Omaha, Neb., hosted by Creighton. The semifinals are slated for Friday, Nov. 23 at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. ET. The winners from those two matches will face off in the Championship match on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. with all three matches taking place at D.J. Sokol Arena at the Ryan Athletic Center. This will be the third time Creighton has hosted the event alongside the Conference.
Up next, Creighton continues its road swing with a visit to Seton Hall on Saturday at 7 p.m., while St. John’s hosts Providence with first serve set for 5 p.m.
