Third-seeded Providence edges sixth-seeded St. John’s, while Marquette outlasts Xavier in penalty kicks.

NEW YORK – The 2018 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship presented Jeep got off to a dramatic start on Saturday night as fourth-seeded Marquette advanced past fifth-seeded Xavier in penalty kicks and third-seeded Providence edged sixth-seeded St. John’s 1-0. The Golden Eagles move on to face regular-season champion and top-seeded Creighton, while the Friars earn a date with second-seeded Georgetown. Semifinals are set for Wednesday, Nov. 7, with kickoff in Washington, D.C., set for 2 p.m., and in Omaha at 8 p.m. ET. Both matches will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi.

#3 seed Providence 1, #6 seed St. John’s 0
Matt DePerro’s 15th-minute goal was all the scoring the Friars needed to punch their ticket into the BIG EAST Semifinals for the fifth time in six years. The defensive battle saw just 11 total shots as PC held a 7-4 advantage, and a 4-3 lead in corners. Colin Miller had one save to pick up his ninth shutout of the season, while Lenny Wilson had two stops for the Red Storm.

The win moves the Friars onto the semifinal at second-seeded Georgetown on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET. PC and GU met on Oct. 24 in Friartown, with the Hoyas scoring two late-game goals to erase an early 1-0 deficit and pick up the decisive road win. Providence and Georgetown last met in the BIG EAST Championship in the 2013 Semifinals, with the Friars advancing on penalty kicks, 5-4.

#4 seed Marquette 2, #5 seed Xavier 2 (2OT) – MU advances on PKs, 7-6
The host Golden Eagles moved past Xavier in a marathon match at Valley Fields, as Marquette advances to the BIG EAST Semifinals for the first time since 2013. The teams played 110 minutes to a 2-2 draw, with Derrick Otim and Samson Sergi scoring for Xavier, and Luka Prpa and Diego Nunez scoring for Marquette. Just like their regular-season meeting, the Musketeers took a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes, and the Golden Eagles responded with two unanswered second-half goals. However, in this one, Xavier answered back to force overtime before Marquette triumphed in PKs, 7-6.

Marquette will face Creighton in the Semifinals on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, with the Bluejays earning a 2-1 win just 10 days ago during their regular-season meeting in Omaha. This will be the first meeting in the BIG EAST Championship between Marquette and Creighton.
