Saturday in the BIG EAST had all kinds of action – Seton Hall nailing down a big road win, Villanova continuing its excellence at MSG, St. John’s staying undefeated along with Georgetown winning in overtime. And DePaul would lead for 39:18 before losing a tight one.
Seton Hall went to Maryland and won 78-74 behind the Myles duo – Powell and Cale. Powell scored a game-high 27 points and Cale added a career-high 23 points. Both players went 8-of-8 from the foul line. Cale gave the Pirates (8-3), who own a five-game winning streak, the lead for good on a 15-foot jumper with 3:15 remaining.
Villanova used a 19-0 surge in the second half to pull away from Connecticut and post an 81-58 win at Madison Square Garden. The Wildcats (9-4) are 17-1 at MSG since the beginning of the 2014-15 season. Eric Paschall scored a game-high 21 points and Phil Booth helped with 18 points on 6-of-6 shooting, seven rebounds and seven assists. Jahvon Quinerly saw his first significant action of the season and had 10 points and four assists in 25 minutes.
Georgetown was stunned with a 30-foot bank shot at the buzzer by Little Rock that sent the game into overtime, but the freshman backcourt of Mac McClung and James Akinjo was not flustered and keyed a 102-90 overtime victory. McClung had a 4-point play in the extra period and finished with 38 points. Akinjo had 25 points and 10 assists.
St. John’s upped its record to 12-0 with a 104-82 victory over Sacred Heart at Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies set a school record with 17 3-pointers. Marvin Clark II and Mustapha Heron led the scoring with 23 points each. Clark II scored all of his points in the first half when St. John’s built a 53-38 lead.
DePaul led throughout its game with Boston College until the Eagles took the lead with 32 seconds left and won 65-62. It was the first home loss this season for the Blue Demons (8-3). Max Strus scored 16 points and Eli Cain added 14 points, but DePaul was hurt by poor shooting, making only 4-of-24 from 3-point range.
BIG EAST teams go into the Christmas holiday with a 92-30 (.754) record. Creighton is the first team to hit the floor after the break. The Bluejays (8-4) host UMKC on Thursday.
