Huskies pick up first win of the season by edging Fairfield, 13-12

BIG EAST teams went 2-0 in midweek action as Connecticut topped local foe Fairfield, 13-12, and -/RV Temple trampled Monmouth, 18-7. The Huskies scored two goals less than 90 seconds apart to break an 11-11 tie with less than seven minutes to go. The Stags struck once more but UConn managed to keep them off the board for the final 96 seconds to preserve the win. Grace Nolan finished with four points off two goals, including the game winner, and two assists, while Grace Breshlian made 15 saves.  Meanwhile in West Long Branch, N.J., reigning BIG EAST Attacker of the Week Nicole Barretta tallied a career-high seven goals, including a first-half natural hat trick, to lead the Owls to their second win on the year.  A trio of Temple players were credited with a pair of caused turnovers, including Maddie Gebert who also added a goal and assist.

In The Polls
The Inside Lacrosse Media Poll was the lone new poll of the week and BIG EAST teams got a nice bump in the new installment. Coming off a 16-9 win over then-No. 17/16 Colorado, Florida jumped from No. 5 to No. 3. The Gators, who were No. 5 in the IWLCA Preseason Poll, will face No. 1/1 Maryland at noon ET on Saturday. Temple received votes for the first time this year, while Denver, coming off a 12-9 win over -/RV Stanford on Sunday continued to receive votes.
 
Up Next
Six games against teams either ranked or receiving votes are on the docket this weekend, highlighted by a showdown between No. 5/3 Florida and No. 1/1 Maryland. The reigning NCAA Champion Terps went 23-0 last season  and are 1-0 so far in 2018. The squads meet in Gainesville at noon ET on Saturday. Villanova and Butler lift the lid on their 2018 campaigns this weekend as the Bulldogs visit Michigan on Friday at 3 p.m., and the Wildcats travel to No. 13/17 Cornell on Saturday at 1 p.m. Other notable matchups include 9/13 Princeton at -/RV Temple (Saturday, 1 p.m.), Georgetown at 19/11 Towson (Saturday, 3 p.m.), RV/RV Denver at -/RV Louisville (Saturday, 1 p.m.) and UConn versus No. 16/8 James Madison at the US Lacrosse Complex in Sparks, Md. (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
