NEW YORK – No BIG EAST men’s lacrosse teams played a midweek contest this past week but all six will play over the weekend with five games on Saturday and one on Sunday. The BIG EAST has two teams ranked in the top 10 this week as Denver remained steady at No. 4/5 and Villanova jumped up from No. 15/15 to No. 7/8. The Wildcats opened their season so far with two overtime wins over higher-ranked opponents.
Three games start at noon. St. John’s (1-1) hosts High Point in Queens at noon on Saturday. The Red Storm is coming off a 14-12 win over Hartford. Sophomore attacker Joe Madsen marked a career-best performance with seven points (5G, 2A). The Hoyas defeated High Point 15-5 in their season-opener. Georgetown (2-0) travels to Towson to play at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Both teams are receiving votes in both polls. Towson is coming off a 15-13 victory over Mount St. Mary’s. Georgetown and Towson have faced each other seven times in program history with Towson owning a 6-1 advantage. No. 7/8 Villanova will look to extend its winning streak to three games, playing on the road again at Hofstra. The Pride is receiving votes in both polls. Villanova is 2-0 for the first time since 2012.
At 1 p.m. Providence (2-1) will host St. Joseph’s and No. 19 Marquette (1-0) will play on the road at Detroit Mercy. The Friars and St. Joseph’s have met 15 times since 19997, PC holds the 9-6 all-time record. It is the first meeting since 2009. Marquette is coming off an 11-10 win in their season-opener over Jacksonville. The Titans are 1-2.
No. 4/5 Denver plays Sunday, hosting Cleveland State. The Pios are 1-1 coming off a 15-12 loss at No. 1 Duke last Friday. Ethan Walker posted his first career sock trick in the loss. After Sunday, Denver will play three-straight on the road.
