Xavier’s Gellenbeck, St. John’s Mooney Tabbed With #BIGEASTbase Weekly Accolades
NEW YORK – Xavier’s Joe Gellenbeck was named BIG EAST Player of the Week, while St. John’s sophomore starter Sean Mooney earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week accolades.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Joe Gellenbeck, Xavier, Grad Student, OF (Lebanon, Ohio)
Grad student Joe Gellenbeck hit .625 (10-for-16) during a 3-1 week for Xavier with a 1.062 slugging percentage. He led the team with four runs scored, three doubles, two triples and 17 total bases. He also walked twice to post a .667 on-base percentage. He collected hits in all four games for Xavier last week. Highlighting his week was a 3-for-3 performance with two runs scored, a double, two walks and a steal in a 10-inning, 3-2 win over No. 8 Kentucky on Tuesday. He scored the game-winning run against Kentucky in the 10th inning. Went a career-best 5-for-5 with a run scored, two RBI and a triple in Xavier’s 7-1 win over Presbyterian on Saturday.
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Sean Mooney, St. John’s, So., RHP (Marmora, N.J.)
Sophomore starter Sean Mooney went 1-0 last week helping St. John’s to a 3-0 win over Monmouth on Friday. Mooney tossed 6.0 innings and struck out 11 batters while scattering just four hits at USA Baseball’s National Training Complex. The 11 strikeouts were a career-high for the sophomore. Mooney held the Hawks without a hit for 4.2 frames to start the contest. Mooney is 2-0 on the year.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Garrett Christman, Butler, Sr., INF/RHP (Noblesville, Ind.)
Hit .438 (7-for-16) in a four-game series sweep of George Mason. His stat line boasted eight RBI and four runs with three multi-hit games. His weekend was highlighted by a three-run homer that lifted Butler to a 3-0 victory in a rain-shortened seven inning contest on Sunday. He also earned a win on the mound by tossing 6.2 innings in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Michael Emodi, Creighton, Jr., Catcher (Omaha, Neb.)
Emodi led Creighton to a series road sweep at UC-Davis with a team-best .467 average (7-of-15). Emodi tied the team-high with seven RBI in three games. He had a .733 slugging with four doubles. He also gunned down three Aggie runners attempting to steal during the series.
Anthony Brocato, St. John’s, Sr., OF (Helmetta, N.J.)
Brocato batted .364 (4-for-11) with seven RBI and three runs. He boasted a .909 slugging. Brocato hit a sac fly in the Red Storm’s 5-2 win over then-No. 6 North Carolina. He hit two home runs against UMBC as St. John’s extended its winning streak to seven straight games.
Ricky Devito, Seton Hall, So., RHP (Staten Island, N.Y.)
Devito made just his second career start against former BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh on Saturday giving Seton Hall a win in the closing game of the weekend. The righty scattered just three hits over six scoreless innings and struck out a career-high seven batters.
Trey Schramm, Xavier, Jr., RHP (Pingree Grove, Ill.)
Schramm was clutch out of the bullpen for a 3-1 week for Xavier. He made two appearances (5.2 innings) and picked up two wins. He limited opponents to a .188 average, struck out three and allowed just one earned run. He tossed three scoreless innings of relief, closing out the game while striking out three and allowing just two hits and three walks (one intentional) against No. 8 Kentucky.
