#BIGEASTtrack Weekly Honors Awarded To Georgetown, Marquette And Xavier
BIG EAST Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Rey Rivera, Georgetown, Fr., Middle Distance (Old Bridge, N.J.)
Georgetown rookie Rey Rivera ran the 18th best time in NCAA Division I in the 800 meter run after a ninth place finish at the Boston University Scarlet and White Invitational. Rivera’s time of 1:49.57 tops the BIG EAST list with two weeks to go before the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships presented by Jeep. It was a personal best for the freshman in his first outing as a collegiate athlete.
BIG EAST Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Daniel Armstrong, Marquette, So., Jumps (Michigan City, Ind.)
Sophomore Daniel Armstrong marked the 16th best jump in the NCAA Division I with his win in the high jump on Saturday at Notre Dame’s Meyo Invitational. Armstrong improved his lifetime best and moved to No. 2 all-time at Marquette with his mark of 2.19 meters (7-2.25 feet). He is a quarter of an inch shy of ranking in the nation’s top 12, which would secure him an automatic bid to NCAA indoor nationals.
BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Madeline Britton, Xavier, Sr., Distance (Bay Village, Ohio)
Xavier senior Madeline Britton posted a time of 16:53.10 in the 5,000-meter run at Notre Dame’s Meyo Invitational on Feb. 2. Her time leads the BIG EAST and ranks 55th nationally. Britton placed fifth in the event. She also competed in the one-mile run at the Akron Invitational on Saturday, placing fourth with a personal-best time of 5:02.86.
BIG EAST Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Julie Clayton, Marquette, Jr., Pole Vault (Waukesha, Wis.)
Marquette junior Julie Clayton had a banner day at the Ranger Classic, hosted by UW-Parkside on Saturday. She won the pole vault with a height of 3.80 meters (12-5.5 feet), which ranks No. 3 all-time at Marquette and is the top height in the BIG EAST this season.
Notable Performances
- Butler freshman Barry Keane finished fourth in the top section of the 3,000-meter run at the Meyo Invitational with the time of 8:04.50. His time ranked third among true freshmen in the NCAA this season. It is third on the BIG EAST list this season and seventh on Butler’s all-time list.
- Bulldog teammate Kelly Mindak broke the Butler school record in the 600-meter run with first place time in her section at the Meyo Invite of 1:34.56.
- DePaul’s Brian Mada won the Meyo Invitational long jump competition with a distance of 7.54 meters. His jump ranks first in the BIG EAST, 34th nationally.
- Blue Demon teammate Alexia Brooks marked the top BIG EAST time in the 60-meter hurdles (8.44). She was the No. 2 collegiate finisher at the Meyo Invitational. Her time ranks 69th nationally.
- Georgetown’s Jody-Ann Knight was the top collegiate finisher in the women’s 200-meter dash in a PR of 24.27, finishing second overall at the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze Park in Staten Island, N.Y. her time is No. 1 in the BIG EAST this season. In the 60-meter dash, she finished fifth overall with a time of 7.69, which ranks second behind Villanova’s Trudy-Ann Williamson. Williamson won the 60-meter race at the same event with a time of 7.49. It is the second fastest time in Villanova history
- Villanova teammate Harry Purcell won the 400-meter run at the Villanova Invitational with a BIG EAST top time of 47.80.
- St. John’s sprinter Maya Stephens became the 400-meter champion at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships at Ocean Breeze Park in Staten Island with a time of 55.42. She then ran a leg of the 4x400-meter squad that also earned championship title honors at the event. Stephens followed up the next day with a silver medal finish in the 4x400-meter relay at the 111th Millrose Games held at the Armory in New York City.
