#BEtennis: Marquette Sweeps Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – Following a perfect weekend for the pair of Golden Eagles, Luis Heredia Gomez and Fleur Eggink garner Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively.
BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week
Luis Heredia Gomez, Marquette, Fr.
Heredia Gomez finished the week a perfect 4-0, guiding Marquette past a pair of BIG EAST opponents. Against Creighton, the freshman paired with Greg Anderson at No. 2 doubles, as the duo clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory. Holding a 3-0 advantage through single play, Heredia Gomez sealed the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set win over Creighton’s Armando Gandini. Facing Xavier on Sunday, the freshman again teamed up with Anderson to clinch the doubles point, before rallying for a tiebreaker win at No. 3 singles in the 7-0 sweep.
BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

Kicking off the weekend teaming up with Natalija Popovic at No. 1 doubles, the duo outlasted Creighton’s pair to clinch the doubles point. Battling the Bluejays’ Erin Epperson at No. 3 singles, the sophomore picked up a straight set victory 6-0, 6-1, as the Golden Eagles rolled to a 4-0 team triumph. In a back and forth battle with Xavier, Popovic and Eggink again paired up to clinch the crucial doubles point on court one, earning the 7-6 tiebreaker. Following five singles matches concluding with the overall match tied 3-3, all eyes turned to court three as Eggink and Xavier’s Sophia Abelson were all knotted up through two sets. The sophomore came out on top with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory to seal the squad’s fifth straight victory on the year.
