CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Defending champion Georgetown, with three of the top five individual scores,  holds a 14-stroke lead after the first round of the 2018 BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep at the Callawassie Island Golf Club.  In sunny, but very breezy conditions, the Hoyas compiled a team score of 299, 11 over par.
 


Xavier is in second place, one stroke ahead of third-place Seton Hall.  Xavier put together a team score of 313 (+25) with Seton Hall at 314 (+26).  Butler and St. John’s are tied for fourth place with team scores of 320 (+32) followed by Creighton at 334 (+46).
The team winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. 

Individually, Georgetown’s Jacquelyn Eleey is the leader after posting a one-under-par 71.  The senior, who was the BIG EAST individual champion as a freshman in 2015, played a steady round that included three birdies and two bogeys.  She was the only player under par for the day.  Teammate Christina Parsells is in second place after carding a one-over-par 73.  Xavier’s Mikayla Fitzpatrick is alone in third place after shooting a 75.  Georgetown’s Pendleton Bogache and Seton Hall’s Cassie Pantelas are tied for fourth at 76 (+4).  Xavier’s Mikayla Smith sits in sixth place after shooting 77 (+5).

Butler was led by Abigail Gleixner and Kelsey McDougall, who are in a three-way tie with Seton Hall’s Sammie Staudt at 78 (+6). 

St. John’s and Creighton’s top performers are in a four-way for 10th place.  St. John’s Andrea Sanchez and Kaitleen Shee along with Creighton’s Sydney Gillespie each carded a 79 (+7).  Georgetown’s Alexa Popowitz also finished the day at 79.   

The second day of the 54-hole tournament will begin at 8 a.m. ET on Saturday.
