Bluejays and Hoyas Advance to BIG EAST Tennis Championship Quarterfinals

CAYCE, S.C. – 
The first day of the 2018 BIG EAST Championships concluded with a pair of sweeps on the women’s side as No. 9 Georgetown topped No. 8 Butler, 4-0, while No. 7 Creighton defeated No. 10 Providence, 4-0.
 
The Hoyas advance to the quarterfinals and will face top-seeded St. John’s, while the Bluejays are set to take on No. 2 DePaul, with both matches scheduled to hit off Friday at 9 a.m. ET.
 
Georgetown wasted no time in the 8-9 matchup as Drew Spinosa and Cecilia Lynham bested Natale Corrigan and Lauren Marx 6-1, at No. 2.  Courts one and three rounded out simultaneously as Georgetown’s duo of Risa Nakagawa and Casey Marx­­­ picked up a 6-3 win over Butler’s pair Jordan Minnick and Bailey Padgett on court one. Court three concluded with Sydney Goodson and Sara Swift topping Carla O’Byrne and Rachel Sutton 6-2, as the Hoyas claimed the doubles point.
In singles action, Goodson grabbed the second point for GU with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Butler’s Corrigan, while Spinosa pushed the overall match lead to 3-0, with a 6-2, 6-0 straight-set victory over the Bulldog’s Marx.
Swift secured the Hoyas shutout with a win at No. 2 singles over Butler’s Sutton, 6-3, 6-2.

The Bluejays set the tone in the second match with the doubles point and never looked back. Claire Embree and Erin Epperson captured a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Katie Marvin and Sera Satkowski, while Kendra Lavallee and Darby Rosette defeated Lauryn Jacobs and Natalie Pitocco 6-4 at No. 3, clinching the doubles point.

Creighton extended its advantage in singles play as Rosette topped Marvin 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 4 spot and Ashley Ishimura outlasted Risa Takenaka 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 position to put the Bluejays up 3-0. Erin Epperson secured the victory over the Friars with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles over Jacobs.
  
The women’s quarterfinals begin on Friday at 9 a.m. with Creighton facing St. John’s, Georgetown challenging DePaul and No. 3 Marquette battling No. 6 Villanova. The women’s tournament continues with No. 4 Xavier matching up against No. 5 Seton Hall at 12:30 p.m. Live Stats for each match can be found here.
 
The BIG EAST men’s quarterfinals kick off at 12:30 p.m. on Friday with No. 1 DePaul facing No. 8 Villanova and No. 2 St. John’s hitting the courts against No. 7 Xavier. The afternoon will conclude with No.3 Marquette challenging No. 6 Creighton, while fourth-seeded Butler battles fifth-seeded Goergetown. Live stats for each match can be found here.
