Marquette Places Three on First Team

NEW YORK –The BIG EAST announced its All-BIG EAST First and Second Teams today with Marquette placing three golfers on the first team and one on the second team.  The All-BIG EAST honorees were chosen by the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.

The announcement comes in advance of the 2018 BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep, which will be held at Callawassie Island Golf Club in Callawassie Island, S.C., April 29-May 1.

The BIG EAST Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coaching Staff of the Year will be announced after the BIG EAST Championship.

The three Marquette first-team honorees are freshman Hunter Eichhorn, sophomore Matt Murlick and junior Oliver Farrell.  The other first-team selections are Seton Hall’s Chris Yeom and Xavier’s Garrett Wood.

Marquette is the top-ranked team by Golfstat going into the BIG EAST Championship and Eichhorn is the No. 1 ranked individual.  A freshman, he leads Marquette with a 71.81 stroke average.  He has compiled three top-five finishes, including medalist honors at the Price’s Give ’Em Five Invite in El Paso, Texas.

Murlick has put together a 72.27 stroke average, third among BIG EAST golfers.  The sophomore has finished in the top 10 three times this year.  He goes into the BIG EAST Championship with a pair of top-10 finishes in his last three events.  He was an All-BIG EAST Second Team pick last year.

Farrell is the only repeat selection on the All-BIG EAST First Team.  This year, the junior has a 73.23 stroke average and has posted two top-10 finishes.

Seton Hall’s Yeom was an All-BIG EAST Second Team pick last year.  In 2017-18, the junior has enjoyed an excellent spring season.  In five tournaments, he has not finished lower than 11th while putting together a 70.43 stroke average in those events.

Xavier’s Wood has had an impressive freshman campaign.  He has been the Musketeers’ top performer in the eight tournaments in which he has participated.  Wood has carded four rounds in the 60s and has a team-leading 72.30 stroke average.

The All-BIG EAST Second Team includes two seniors, one junior and two sophomores.  The seniors are Sam Madsen of Georgetown and Andy Butler of Villanova.  The junior is Austin Kendziorski of Marquette.  The sophomores are Logan Sabins of Villanova and Connor Daly of Villanova.

Georgetown’s Madsen has earned All-BIG EAST honors for a second straight season.  The senior, who has finished in the top 10 in his first three BIG EAST Championships, has a 72.54 stroke average for this year, which includes a win at the ECU Intercollegiate.

The other senior on the second team, Villanova’s Butler, earned the second-team recognition with Daly, his sophomore teammate.  Both golfers have compiled a 73.43 stroke average and have recorded top-five finishes this spring.

Butler’s Sabins, though a sophomore, is in his first year competing for the Bulldogs.  He leads the team with a 73.80 stroke average, which includes three rounds in the 60s.  He has finished in the top 10 in eight tournaments this year.

Marquette’s Kendziorski has been an important contributor to the Golden Eagles’ success.  He has four top-10 finishes, including co-medalist honors at the Marquette Invitational.  The junior has a stroke average of 73.12, which ranks sixth in the BIG EAST.
