St. John’s Mascarella; Creighton’s Tapani Earn #BIGEASTbase Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – St. John’s backstop Wyatt Mascarella was named BIG EAST Player of the Week; while Creighton ace Ryan Tapani earns his third BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week nod this season.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Wyatt Mascarella, St. John’s, Jr., C (Cary, Ill.)
St. John’s junior Wyatt Mascarella played both catcher and designated hitter in a 2-1 series at Xavier this weekend. Mascarella batted .583 (7-for-12) with five runs scored, five RBI, two doubles, a home run and two walks, getting more than one hit in each game of the series. In St. John’s offensive explosion on Saturday to even the series at 1-1, Mascarella went 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBI.
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Ryan Tapani, Creighton, Sr., RHP (Waysata, Minn.)
The Creighton ace took care of business on Friday night as he allowed no runs to score during 8.0 innings of work. Ryan Tapani had nine strikeouts in the 8-0 win, allowing eight hits with just one walk. After working out of trouble in the first few innings, Tapani returned 15 of the last 19 batters he faced. He left the game having thrown a career-high 111 pitches. In the third inning, Tapani worked around consecutive one-out singles with back-to-back strikeouts.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Gehrig Parker, Butler, Sr., OF (Park Ridge, Ill.)
Parker paced the Butler offense by hitting .471 from the plate. Half of his hits went for extra bases with the senior right fielder collecting four doubles as he got a hit in every game. He also added two runs, two RBI, four walks and two stolen bases.
Ryan Davis, Georgetown, So., OF (Danville, Calf.)
In a 3-1 week for the Hoyas, Davis hit .471 (8-for-17) with two runs, four RBI, two doubles, two walks and a stolen base. In the series win at Creighton, Davis went 3-fo-12 (.250). In the series clincher against Creighton, Davis hit a key RBI double and scored a run in the Hoyas’ five-run eighth inning.
Brent Killam, Georgetown, So., LHP (Nokomis, Fla.)
Killam pitched a career-high 8.1 innings to lead Georgetown to a 6-3 Saturday victory at Creighton. He pitched into the ninth inning and allowed just three runs, two earned on five hits. He struck out eight en route to his fifth win of the season.
Ricky DeVito, Seton Hall, So., RHP (Staten Island, N.Y.)
DeVito went for 6.0 shutout innings for a 2-1 Seton Hall victory over Villanova. DeVito scattered three singles and struck out nine while using just 97 pitches. He walked three.
Damien Richard, Xavier, Sr., RHP (Versailles, Ohio)
Richard tossed a solid 6.1 innings against league-leading St. John’s, tying his career-high with eight strikeouts and earning the win in Friday’s series’ opener, St. John’s first league loss of the season. The senior scattered five hits and held the league’s best offense to a .208 batting average.
