NEW YORK – Georgetown senior Jacquelyn Eleey, the individual winner of last week’s BIG EAST Championship, has been named BIG EAST Player of the Year in women’s golf. Seton Hall’s Mia Kness has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. Eleey and Kness headline a seven-player All-BIG EAST Team. The selections were made by the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
The Georgetown coaching staff, led by head coach Kate Schanuel, was named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
Eleey, a senior from Quincy, Mass., became the first women’s golfer in BIG EAST history to win two individual conference titles when she earned medalist honors at Callawassie Island (S.C.) Golf Club on April 20-22. She shot a six-over-par 222 for the 54 holes and won by seven strokes. Her first BIG EAST title came in her freshman season. For 2017-18, she won three tournaments and compiled a 74.80 stroke average, according to Golfstat. Eleey has been All-BIG EAST in all four years of her career.
Eleey is joined on the All-BIG EAST Team by teammate Christina Parsells. Three Seton Hall players received All-BIG EAST recognition. In addition to Kness, Lizzie Win and Cassie Pantelas made the all-conference squad. Xavier’s Mikayla Fitzpatrick and St. John’s Linda Wang also were selected.
Kness, a native of Venetia, Pa., enjoyed a very successful freshman season at Seton Hall. She tied for fourth place at the BIG EAST Championship with her teammates Win and Pantelas, at 230 (+14). Kness posted a top-10 finish in four of her final six tournaments of the year and finished with a 75.27 average.
Win, a sophomore from Sylvania, Ohio, compiled a stroke average of 75.73. She registered four top-10 finishes in 2017-18 and helped the Pirates win three events in nine tournaments. Win earned All-BIG EAST honors last year.
Pantelas, a senior from Canton, Ohio, also earned All-BIG EAST accolades last year. This season, her fourth-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship was her third top-5 conference championship finish of her career. This year, she put together four top-10 finishes and compiled a 76.46 stroke average.
Georgetown’s Parsells, a junior from Bernardsville, N.J., has picked up All-BIG EAST honors each of her three years as a collegian. This year, she tied for second at the BIG EAST Championship behind Eleey and produced three top-10 finishes in her last four events. Her stroke average is 76.37.
St. John’s Wang finished her season with a tie for seventh place at the BIG EAST Championship. The sophomore from Fresh Meadows, N.Y., posted four top-10 finishes and one win in eight tournaments this year. Her stroke average was 76.85.
Xavier’s Fitzpatrick was the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year in 2016-17. This year, the native of Phoenix, Ariz., finished in the top 10 in five of her nine regular-season tournaments and tied for 12th at the BIG EAST Championship. The sophomore compiled a stroke average of 75.59.
