BIG EAST Volleyball Update (8/31/18)

NEW YORK
– The second week of BIG EAST volleyball action offers more interleague competition with Seton Hall playing the only match this weekend versus a ranked opponent. The Pirates welcome No. 14 Pittsburgh on Saturday morning. They will also welcome VCU and Oklahoma for the Seton Hall Classic. No. 15 Creighton will travel to Dallas, Texas for the SMU Doubletree Classic, facing the host Mustangs on Saturday, along with Arkansas State and North Carolina State. Marquette, receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll, will head to the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic in St. Louis to battle the Billikens, Kansas State and Western Kentucky.
 
Three BIG EAST teams will host their own tournaments this weekend, in addition to Seton Hall. Butler will stay home for the Top Dawg Challenge, welcoming Auburn, Eastern Illinois and Illinois State. Georgetown will host George Mason, Norfolk State and Penn for the Georgetown Classic. Brown, Fairleigh Dickinson and UMass-Lowell will head to Providence for the 14th Annual Friar Volleyball Classic.
 
DePaul stays in the Midwest for the Chippewa Invitational at Central Michigan to battle the host Chippewas along with La Salle and Valparaiso. Remaining in the Empire State, St. John’s will travel to Ithaca, N.Y. for the Cornell Invitational against the Big Red, Buffalo and Siena. Villanova makes its way to Annapolis, Md. for Navy’s Kristen Dickmann Invitational which also includes Alabama and Dartmouth. Xavier will head to the tropics for the Puerto Rico Tournament in San Juan to match up with Arizona State, Missouri and Towson.

After the first weekend of play, Marquette leads the nation in kills per set with 16.20. The Golden Eagles are third in assists per set at 15.10. TCU leads that category with 15.23. Villanova also sits in the top five of a couple categories. At 44.55, the Wildcats are fourth in team attacks per set. Northern Kentucky is the top team in the category with 47.33. They are also fifth in kills per set at 15.64.
