Connecticut’s Boker, Pieper Earn #BIGEASTfh Weekly Honors; ODU’s Knobloch Named Freshman of the Week
NEW YORK – Undefeated Connecticut earns both Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week honors from the BIG EAST as the duo of Svea Boker and Cecile Pieper tallied 13 points between them. No. 21 Old Dominion rookie Merle Knobloch was named Freshman of the Week after a pair of productive goals that helped the Monarchs to another 2-0 weekend.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Svea Boker, Connecticut, Jr., Forward (Bremen, Germany)
Connecticut junior forward Svea Boker tallied seven points off three goals and an assist in a 2-0 week for the No. 1 Huskies. In an 8-3 win over UMass, Boker tallied two goals and one assist. She scored the third goal in the 3-0 shutout at No. 10 Syracuse. Boker had five shots on goal in two games.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Cecile Pieper, Connecticut, R-Sr., Back (Mannheim, Germany)
Connecticut senior back Cecile Piper had an impact on both sides of the field in a 2-0 week for the top ranked Huskies. Piper not only limited her opponent offenses to just 11 total shots (five for UMass, six for No. 10 Syracuse), she also was part of a defense that gave up just four total penalty corners. Connecticut allowed just three goals to score and shutout No. 10 Syracuse in the two road victories. Pieper also added two goals and two assists in two games. Pieper leads the Huskies this season with five goals and 13 points.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Merle Knobloch, Old Dominion, Fr., Forward (Darmstadt, Germany)
Old Dominion freshman forward Merle Knobloch scored two goals in 2-0 road week for the No. 21 Monarchs. One of Knobloch’s goals was the game-tying score in the 64th minute at No. 8 Virginia. ODU went onto win, 2-1 in overtime. Her pair of goals were the first of her college career. She currently ties for team lead in points with seven (2G, 3A) for the 6-0 Monarchs.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Rebecca Birch, Old Dominion, Jr., Back (Leeds, United Kingdom)
Birch scored both game-winning goals in a 2-0 week for No. 21 ODU, including the overtime winner at No. 8 Virginia. Birch helped anchor a defense that held their opponents to just two goals for the weekend. UVA entered the weekend averaging three goals per game.
Lydia Rice, Providence, Sr., Goalkeeper (Carle Place, N.Y.)
Rice played all 140 minutes in a 1-1 week for the Friars. The keeper boasted a 1.00 goals against average and a .778 save percentage as she tallied seven saves (five in the 2-1 win at New Hampshire and two in the 1-0 loss to No. 14 Iowa). Iowa entered the game averaging 4.0 goals per game.
Lindsay Getz, Georgetown, Junior, Forward (Northfield, Ill.)
Getz scored two goals in a 7-0 win for the Hoyas over LIU Brooklyn. She was the only Hoya to score multiple goals as Georgetown remains undefeated at 5-0.
