Three #BEfútbol Games On BEDN For Weekend #2
BIG EAST Men's Soccer Weekly Update (9.20.18)
NEW YORK – The second weekend of BIG EAST play kicks off after a 3-3-0 midweek non-conference result highlighted by Georgetown’s upset of No. 9 Duke, 1-0 in Durham on Tuesday. Also earning wins for the weekend was Villanova, 3-2, over La Salle and Seton Hall, 2-1, over Sacred Heart. All three teams bounced back with wins after starting the league slate 0-1.
Three games will be on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi this weekend, starting with St. John’s at Xavier on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET. Xavier is unbeaten this season at 3-0-3. Xavier leads the all-time BIG EAST series 3-1-1. St. John’s won last year’s meeting 3-0. On Saturday, BEDN will carry Marquette at Seton Hall (6:30 p.m.) and Providence at Butler (7 p.m.) The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series against the Pirates, 6-4-3, winning the last two of three meetings. Seton Hall shut out Marquette, 2-0 in 2016. Butler leads the league series against Providence 4-1-1. The Friars’ sole victory was in 2013, 3-2, the first meeting between teams. The two teams met in the 2015 tournament first round and ended the game in a double-overtime tie. PC advanced on PK’s 4-2. Butler shut out the Friars in all four Bulldog victories.
DePaul will play at Georgetown on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. DePaul will be looking to advance its BIG EAST streak to two games, while the Hoyas are looking to break into the win column in league play after a big shutout victory over Duke on Tuesday. Georgetown leads the series, 7-1-1. On Saturday afternoon, Villanova will welcome No. 12 Creighton (4 p.m.). Creighton leads the series 3-2-0 and won the last meeting 2-1. Villanova shut out Creighton in 2016, 1-0.
Week 1 Round up
In the opening weekend of BIG EAST play, Creighton, DePaul, Marquette, St. John’s and Xavier each registered a win. The Blue Demons set the tone early with a 2-1 2OT win over Providence to earn coach Mark Plotkin his first league victory as head coach. Istvan Wilhelms scored both goals. Xavier then rallied back on the road at Georgetown to defeat the Hoyas, 3-2, with a winning goal in the 86th minute. St. John’s tallied its third consecutive 1-0 victory over Seton Hall in a regional matchup. The night games resulted in the same score as then-No. 25 Creighton and Marquette shut out their opponents Butler and then-No. 13 Villanova, 3-0. The Bluejays have not allowed a goal at home this season through its first four contests at Morrison Stadium. The win for the Golden Eagles snapped a three-game losing skid and was the first victory over a ranked team since a 1-0 overtime win over No. 7 Akron in the second round of the 2013 NCAA tournament.
Creighton’s Fortress Morrison Leads Division I In Average Attendance
Creighton’s home pitch of Morrison Stadium leads the NCAA in average attendance with 3,999. 15,995 Bluejay fans have filled Fortress Morrison during four games this season. At last weekend’s Homecoming festivities, Creighton played Butler in front of a crowd of 4,711. The crowd is the seventh highest so far this year among Division I schools.
Providence ranks 12th in average attendance with 1,907. St. John’s is 36th with 979.
BIG EAST Teams 5-1-3 Against united soccer top 25
During non-conference play so far this season, the BIG EAST has tallied a 5-1-3 (.722) record against teams that are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 national poll. Of those five wins, three were accomplished by teams unranked in the polls. Providence upset then-No. 8 Southern Methodist, 2-1, on the road in double overtime and DePaul upset then-No. 14 Western Michigan, 1-0 on Wish Field. Additionally, Creighton, who at the time was receiving votes in the poll, defeated then-No. 11 Clemson, 2-0, on the Bluejays’ home-opener. Georgetown tied with then-No. 10 Stanford, 1-1 (2OT), while Xavier and No. 6 Kentucky played to a scoreless draw. Most recently, Georgetown defeated No. 9 Duke, 1-0. Achara scored the eventual game winning goal in the sixth minute of play. Dylan Nealis assisted. Giannis Nikopolidis had five saves in the match (
