BIG EAST Openers
Conference play kicks off this weekend for all 10 teams, beginning with two matches on Saturday. All five matches will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Why We’re Watching …
DePaul at Seton Hall (Saturday, 1 p.m.): One of the top offenses against one of the top defenses. The Blue Demons are a perennial offensive power and 2018 has been no different as they have 15 goals over nine games, including five for Morgan Turner. The Hall boasts the second-best goals against average in the BIG EAST at just 0.61 per game, as Anna MacLean shows an .882 save percentage and averages five stops per contest.
Providence at Villanova (Saturday, 1 p.m.): Two teams on the rise – the Wildcats have their most non-conference wins since 2009, while the Friars have the second-highest winning percentage amongst BIG EAST teams at the end of the non-league portion of the schedule. It will be a game highlighted by young scorers as the combined top five point earners from both squads are all sophomores or freshmen. PC sophomore Hannah McNulty has 13 points off six goals and an assist, while Villanova rookie Chloe O’Neill has three goals, including two game winners.
#10 Georgetown at St. John’s (Sunday, 1 p.m.): BIG EAST goals leader Zsani Kajan has seven scores on the year, sparking the Red Storm’s offense who is tied with the nationally ranked Hoyas for second in the league with 4.78 points per game. Nine different GU players have at least one point on the year, including 12 for Kyra Carusa who ranks eighth among NCAA active career leaders with 82. Kajan will go head-to-head with the BIG EAST’s stingiest goalkeeper – Arielle Schechtman. Schechtman boasts league-bests marks in save percentage (.939) and goals against average (0.27).
Butler at Marquette (Sunday, 2 p.m.): The Bulldogs and Golden Eagles were picked to finish second and third in the BIG EAST, respectively, but both will enter the contest with chips on their shoulders. Butler dropped out of the national poll after three straight weeks of being in the top 25 after losing a pair of games in Texas last weekend to end non-conference on a two-game skid. Marquette picked up a notable win over RV Milwaukee on Monday to end non-league on a positive note, but the Golden Eagles have struggled to find the back of the net through nine games and need to find their scoring groove in BIG EAST play. Both teams boast talented goalkeepers to boot, as scoring could be at a premium on Sunday.
Xavier at Creighton (Sunday, 2 p.m.): The Musketeers have their longest winning streak (five games) since 2003, with all five coming in shutout fashion as XU hasn’t surrendered a goal since August. After struggling to find their scoring early in the season, the Bluejays found rhythm midway through non-conference, but were held scoreless in Friday’s non-league finale against No. 20 Oklahoma State – their first time without a goal since August 24. Taryn Jakubowski is always an offensive threat for Creighton, while Samantha Dewey sparked Xavier with two game-winning goals last week alone.
