Moroni Repeats As #BIGEASTfh Offensive Player Of The Week, ODU’s Vick And Westera Earn Defensive And Freshman Honors
NEW YORK – With two wins on the road against ranked teams, Old Dominion grabs two of the three BIG EAST Field Hockey weekly honors with midfielder Ilse Westera grabbing Freshman honors and redshirt senior Kristen Vick named Defensive Player of the Week. Liberty’s Agueda Moroni repeats as Offensive Player of the Week with a 10-point output in two games.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Agueda Moroni, Liberty, Sr., M/F (Cordoba, Argentina)
Liberty senior midfielder/forward Agueda Moroni repeats as Offensive Player of the Week after a five-goal performance in a 2-0 week on the road for the No. 23 Flames. Moroni scored both of Liberty’s goals in a narrow 2-1 victory at Kent State on Friday. She scored the opening goal of the game in the 15th minute, then followed with the eventual game-winner at 55:55 on the clock, capitalizing on a penalty corner. At Ohio, Moroni netted a hat trick in a 7-0 victory for the Flames. All three goals were scored in the first 21:35 of action. Her five goals came on just six shots on frame, 11 shots total.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Kristen Vick, Old Dominion, RS-Sr., B (Suffolk, Va.)
Old Dominion’s senior back Kristen Vick helped the Monarchs go 2-0 last week with road wins over No. 22 William & Mary and No. 17 James Madison. With Vick’s leadership, Old Dominion shut out James Madison, 3-0, allowing just three shots on frame, six shots in total with only five penalty corners. As a bonus, Vick assisted on the offensive side, adding the second goal of the game at 5:36, the first goal of her career. In Friday’s 4-3 OT win at William & Mary, Vick helped ODU maintain the Tribe to just eight shots on goal, despite three scores.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Ilse Westera, Old Dominion, RS-Fr., M (Dordrecht, The Netherlands)
Redshirt freshman middie Ilse Westera tallied seven points off three goals and an assist for Old Dominion, who outscored their ranked opponents 7-3 on the road last week. Westera scored two of ODU’s four goals in the come-back win at No. 22 William & Mary, with back-to-back goals in the 64th and 67th minute of play. In the 3-0 win at No. 17 James Madison, Westera scored the opening goal of the game, unassisted as she tapped the ball into an open goal after a rebound. She also assisted Vick’s go-ahead goal at 35:36. For the weekend, she took just four shots, three which ended up on target resulting in goals.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Cami Osborne, Georgetown, So., F (Newton Square, Pa.)
Osborne put together a three-goal week for the 2-0 Hoyas with one goal in a 2-0 win over Sacred Heart and the first two in a 4-2 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.). She took just six shots total, five were on goal.
Allyson Parker, Providence, Jr., M (Orange, Mass.)
Parker netted three goals last week in a 2-1 week for the Friars. She scored the game-winning goal against Brown with 3:10 remaining in regulation, then finished the week by scoring Providence’s first two goals of the game against Bryant to solidify the win. Seven of her shot attempts were on cage for the week (.700).
Erika Miller, Villanova, Sr., GK (Malvern, Pa.)
Miller had a total of nine saves in a 2-0 week for Villanova that included a 3-2 OT win over Indiana and a 7-3 victory over Lehigh. Miller had four saves against IU and five against Lehigh.
