MBB Minute – Marquette’s Howard Sets League Scoring Record in OT Win at Creighton
Marquette’s Markus Howard broke the BIG EAST single-game scoring record by pouring in 53 points in a 106-104 overtime victory at Creighton on Wednesday night. He broke the record of 52 points that he set last year and shared with Providence’s Marshon Brooks.
The Golden Eagles, who improved to 13-3 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST, needed a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Sam Hauser at the end of regulation to force the extra period. Howard then scored Marquette’s first 11 points of overtime. The Golden Eagles did not lead until the extra period. Howard’s 15 field goals, 10 3-pointers and 13 free throws were all season highs for any BIG EAST player this season.
Creighton got plenty of productions from its guards. Ty-Shon Alexander had 23 points, Davion Mintz scored a career-high 21 points and Mitch Ballock added 16. The Bluejays (10-6, 1-2) shot 50.8 percent from the field and committed only nine turnovers in the 45 minutes.
Seton Hall improved to 3-1 in league play and 12-4 overall with a 76-75 win over Butler. The Pirates have won eight of their last nine games. Myles Powell led the winners with 31 points. The Hall led 34-25 at halftime, then held off a late charge by the Bulldogs (10-6, 1-2). Kamar Baldwin led Butler with 23 points and Joey Brunk had his first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Georgetown started quickly at Xavier by making its first six 3-point shots and built a 39-22 lead. But Xavier (10-7, 2-2) chipped away at the advantage and overtook the Hoyas in the second half, recording an 81-75 win. Forwards Zach Hankins and Tyrique Jones led the attack with 23 and 19 points, respectively. Each grabbed 10 rebounds. Jessie Govan led the Hoyas (11-5, 1-2) with 27 points and eight rebounds.
