MBB Minute -- Georgetown Edges Providence in Double OT; Marquette, DePaul Win
The three Saturday league contests had plenty of drama along with some outstanding performances. Georgetown, Marquette and DePaul gained victories.
The Georgetown-Providence game had the most drama. The Hoyas forced overtime and then a second overtime with late 3-pointers by freshman guards and came away with a 96-90 victory at Capital One Arena. Mac McClung’s 3-pointer at the end of regulation tied the game 73-73. James Akinjo’s trey in the final seconds of the first overtime tied the game 86-86. Jessie Govan scored a game-high 33 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. For the Friars, Alpha Diallo finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Nate Watson added 21 points and seven boards. The Hoyas are 2-2 in the BIG EAST while Providence is 0-3.
At Fiserv Forum, visiting Seton Hall overcame a 13-point deficit against No. 21 Marquette and took a 63-62 lead with 3:05 to play, but the Golden Eagles regained the lead and posted a 70-66 victory. Marquette’s Markus Howard, who was coming off a BIG EAST single-game record 53 points against Creighton, had 26 points, six rebounds and six assists. Theo John added 10 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Seton Hall was led by Myles Powell’s 21 points and nine rebounds. Sandro Mamukelashvili and Quincy McKnight each had 13 points and six rebounds. The Golden Eagles moved into second place with a 3-1 record while the Pirates fell to 3-2.
DePaul led for 38 minutes in its 79-71 victory over No. 24 St. John’s at Carnesecca Arena. The frontcourt duo of Femi Olujobi and Paul Reed combined for 45 points and 18 rebounds. Olujobi scored a game-high 27 points. Reed had his first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. St. John’s had to play without Shamorie Ponds who missed the game with a back strain. L.J. Figueroa had a team-high 23 points and Justin Simon added 20 points. DePaul is 2-2 in BIG EAST play while St. John’s is 2-3.
The Sunday schedule has two games, both starting at noon ET. Villanova visits Creighton on FOX and Xavier hosts Butler on CBS Sports Network. In both series, the last meeting went to overtime. Creighton defeated Villanova 89-83 in Omaha. Xavier beat Butler 98-93 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Creighton ranks first in the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 84.9 points per game while the Wildcats are first in scoring defense, allowing 66.0. The Musketeers have won nine of the last 12 meetings with the Bulldogs.
