NEW YORK – For the fourth time this season, Marquette guard Markus Howard has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Georgetown’s James Akinjo has taken BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for the second time.  Howard broke the BIG EAST single-game scoring record in a 2-0 week and Akinjo made critical contributions in a double-overtime victory.    

BIG EAST Player of the Week
Markus Howard, Marquette, G, Jr. – Howard takes Player of the Week honors after averaging 39.5 points in a pair of victories.  In a 106-104 overtime win at Creighton, Howard broke his own BIG EAST single-game scoring mark by pouring in 53 points.  He shared the previous record of 52 points with Providence’s Marshon Brooks.  For the game, Howard shot 15-of-26 from the field and 10-of-14 from 3-point range.  He followed that performance with a 26-point effort in a 70-66 win against Seton Hall. 

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
James Akinjo, Georgetown, G, Fr. – Akinjo averaged 16.5 points, 7.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week.  In a 96-90 double-overtime victory over Providence, he had 20 points and a collegiate-high nine assists.  His 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the first overtime forced the second extra period.  For the season, the point guard is averaging 14.5 points and ranks third in the BIG EAST in assists with a 4.8 mark.         
 
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Femi Olujobi, DePaul, F, Sr.
Posted season highs of 27 points and eight rebounds in a 79-71 win at St. John’s.  Shot 11-of-19 (.579) from the field.          
Jessie Govan, Georgetown, F, Sr.
Averaged 30.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in a 1-1 week.  Scored a career-high 33 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked four shots in a double OT win over Providence (96-90).
Myles Powell, Seton Hall, G, Jr.
Averaged 26.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week.  Had 31 points in a win against Butler (76-75) and 21 points and nine rebounds in a loss at Marquette (70-66).    
Phil Booth, Villanova, G, Sr.
Had 28 points and seven assists in a win at Creighton (90-78).  Posted 23 points and seven rebounds in a victory versus St. John’s (76-71).            
Paul Scruggs, Xavier, G, So.
Averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a 2-0 week while taking over point guard duties for the injured Quentin Goodin.
