DePaul, Xavier Claim Season’s First BIG EAST Tennis Awards
NEW YORK – DePaul’s Chris Casati and Xavier’s Ahmeir Kyle have been awarded the first BIG EAST Tennis Male and Female Athlete of the Week honors for 2019, respectively. Both players helped their team capture a win over the weekend.
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Chris Casati, DePaul, Jr. (Deerfield, Ill.)
Casati posted two victories in the Blue Demons’ season opener against Green Bay, 4-3. The junior, along with teammate Fran Tonejc, won their doubles match 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Casati went on to clinch the final point for DePaul, defeating Green Bay’s Dipin Wadhwa 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, in thrilling fashion. Blue Demon Boris Spanjaard gave Casati the opportunity to secure the team victory after he tied the score 3-3. DePaul fell in their second match of the weekend to Minnesota.
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Ahmeir Kyle, Xavier, So. (St. Joseph, Mich.)
Kyle helped the Musketeers secure a win versus North Texas, 5-2, over the weekend. She won her doubles match, 6-4, along with teammate Emily Thomas to help Xavier take the doubles point against the Mean Green. Kyle then defeated North Texas’ Maria Kononova, 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles spot. Versus Iowa, Kyle and Thomas partnered again to win the lone match of the day for Xavier at No. 2 doubles as the Musketeers fell to the Hawkeyes.
