DePaul Senior and Marquette Junior Earn #BEtennis Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – DePaul senior Keisha Clousing and Marquette junior Luke Smrek picked up this week’s BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades. Clousing helped the Blue Demons grab wins over BIG EAST foes Georgetown and Butler at the No. 1 position. Smrek guided the Golden Eagles to a pair of victories this past weekend, including a triumph against BIG EAST adversary Georgetown.
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Luke Smrek, Marquette, Jr. (Wellend, Ontario)
Smrek went undefeated over the weekend starting with Marquette’s home opening win versus BIG EAST rival Georgetown, 5-2. At the No. 2 spot, Smrek defeated Michael Chen 7-6, 6-0. He then partnered with Luis Heredia Gomez to take down Michael Chen and Charlie Sharton 7-5 at No. 2 doubles, which clinched the doubles point for MU. Against UIC, he was victorious again on the No. 2 singles court, defeating Johan Hedstrom 7-6, 4-6, 11-9. Smrek once again clinched the doubles point for the Golden Eagles with Brett Meyers 6-3 at No. 2. Marquette took down the Flames 7-0 to help the Golden Eagles win their 13
th straight win at home.
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Keisha Clousing, DePaul, Sr. (Wheaton, Ill.)
At No. 1 for the Blue Demons, Clousing helped secure two wins for DePaul over BIG EAST teams. Against Georgetown, she helped the Blue Demons pick up the doubles point by defeating Sofie Moenster and Sydney Goodson 6-1 along with teammate Lenka Antonijevic at No. 1. She then won 6-1, 6-0 versus Moenster for the singles point as DePaul won the match 5-2. In a sweep of Butler, Clousing won the No. 1 singles point 6-2, 6-2 against Emily Neal. Again partnering with Antonijevic at No. 1, the duo helped clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 win versus Neal and Sara Linn.
