MBB Minute -- Seton Hall, Georgetown Grab Road Victories; Villanova Wins at Home
Seton Hall and Georgetown picked up road wins Wednesday night. DePaul almost made it 3-0 for the away teams before Villanova prevailed with a late rally.
Seton Hall trailed by 10 points with 12:16 left at Cintas Center before outscoring the Musketeers 34-14 the rest of the way in an 80-70 win. Guard Myles Powell shined with game highs of 25 points and eight assists. He shot 9-of-15 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Xavier’s Paul Scruggs scored 22 points and center Zach Hankins finished with 20 points and six rebounds. Seton Hall is the first league team to be 2-0. Xavier is 1-1.
Georgetown won its fourth game in a row, handing Butler an 84-76 defeat at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Guard Greg Malinowski, who entered the game with a 5.8 scoring average, poured in 26 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 from 3-point range. Jessie Govan added 17 points and six boards for the Hoyas. Kamar Baldwin had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs. The game was the BIG EAST opener for both teams. The road team has won the last five games in the series.
DePaul led at Villanova for 32 minutes before the Wildcats caught the Blue Demons and held on for a 73-68 victory. Eric Paschall scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down six rebounds for Villanova. Phil Booth and freshman Saddiq Bey each added 15 points. Villanova connected on 16-of-18 from the foul line. Eli Cain and Max Strus each had 16 points for DePaul. It was the Wildcats’ league opener while the Blue Demons fell to 0-2.
BIG EAST play resumes on Saturday with a trio of afternoon contests. St. John’s plays at Georgetown at 1 p.m. ET on CBS. Villanova visits Providence at 2 p.m. on FOX. Butler hosts Creighton at noon on FS1.
