St. John's Ponds, Marquette's Hauser Take #BIGEASTmbb Honors
NEW YORK – St. John’s guard Shamorie Ponds has been tabbed BIG EAST Player of the Week and Marquette forward Joey Hauser has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Ponds led the Johnnies to a 2-0 week and Hauser made strong contributions in a 1-1 week for the Golden Eagles. Both players win weekly honors for the second time this season.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s, G, Jr. – Ponds excelled in every category while leading the Johnnies to an 89-69 home win against Marquette and a 97-94 overtime victory at Georgetown. Against Marquette, the junior had 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists. At Georgetown, Ponds finished with 37 points, six assists and four steals. For the week, he averaged 31.5 points, 5.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals. He also shot 52.8 percent from the field and 58.8 percent from 3-point range.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Joey Hauser, Marquette, F, Fr. – Hauser averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two contests. The freshman helped the Golden Eagles beat Xavier 70-52 with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and five rebounds. For the week, he shot 63.2 percent from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. For the season, the 6-9 forward is averaging 10.5 points and 6.1 rebounds.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Kamar Baldwin, Butler, G, Jr.
Averaged 22.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals in a 1-1 week. Scored season-high 28 points in a win over Creighton (84-69).
Martin Krampelj, Creighton, F, Jr.
Scored 16 points at Providence and at Butler in a 1-1 week. Shot a combined 11-of-17 (.647) from the floor. Averaged 8.5 rebounds.
Greg Malinowski, Georgetown, G, Sr.
Scored a career-high 26 points in a win at Butler (84-76) and averaged 19.5 points in a 1-1 week. Had 13 points, seven assists and five rebounds in a 97-94 overtime loss to St. John’s.
Myles Powell, Seton Hall, G, Jr.
Averaged 20.5 points and 5.5 assists in a 1-1 week on the road. Had 25 points and a career-high eight assists in a win over Xavier (80-70).
Phil Booth, Villanova, G, Sr.
In a 2-0 week, averaged 19.0 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds. Scored a game-high 23 points in a victory at Providence (65-59).
