WSOC Notes 10.12 Update
NEW YORK – BIG EAST women’s soccer conference play crosses the halfway point on Sunday as all 10 teams play their fifth league match. All five tilts kick off at 1 p.m. ET, including Creighton at No. 10 Georgetown which is streaming on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi.
Why We’re Watching …
Creighton at #10 Georgetown (BEDN, 1 p.m.): The Hoyas are cruising right now, winners of eight straight by a combined 29-5 margin. Amanda Carolan and Paula Germino-Watnick have shined offensively during that stretch, with Carolan tallying 18 points off seven goals and four assists and Germino-Watnick at 16, five and six during that eight-game stretch. Creighton, however, is the last BIG EAST team to earn a point at Shaw Field, dating back to Oct. 5, 2017, when he Bluejays stunned the then-12th-ranked Hoyas in a 1-1 draw. Since that match, GU is 8-0 against BIG EAST teams in the regular season at Shaw Field, and has outscored conference foes 16-1 during that span. Talented rookie Skylar Heinrich will look to snap that streak as the Bluejay freshman has 20 points (9g, 2a), including three game-winning goals.
DePaul at Villanova (Villanova.com, 1 p.m.): Knotted at second-place in the standings, both climbed last week after the Blue Demons stretched their unbeaten streak to three and the Wildcats picked up their second win of the conference season in emphatic fashion. DePaul has outshot its last three opponents and outscored them by a 4-1 margin. Morgan Turner has two of her team-high five goals during that span. Villanova’s offense came alive at Seton Hall on Thursday while limiting its opponent to one goal or less for the eighth time this season. Brice McInroy continues to lead Nova with 11 points (5g, 1a), including three game winners.
St. John’s at Butler (YouTube, 1 p.m.): The Red Storm are coming off a heartbreaker to Marquette on Thursday night, despite a heroic effort by Zsani Kajan which saw the redshirt-junior score a pair goals. Kajan now has six goals on the year to rank fifth in the BIG EAST, one shy of Butler leader Anja Savich, who sits in fourth place with seven scores. The Bulldogs are unbeaten over their last two to jump into a four-way tie for second place in the standings.
Marquette at Seton Hall (SHUPirates.com, 1 p.m.): The Pirates have gotten off to a rough start in BIG EAST play, but on the bright side saw a flair of offense on Thursday night with their first score of conference play. Laura Hooper scored her second goal of the season in The Hall’s setback to Villanova. Marquette is unbeaten over its last two matches, winning in golden goal fashion on Thursday night in Queens. Macey Shock has been a pleasant surprise for MU, scoring the game winner against St. John’s and tallying three scores in six appearances off the bench this season.
Providence at Xavier (GoXavier.com, 1 p.m.): These two have finished within a game of each other in the standings over the last two seasons, including tying for fourth place in 2018, so this outcome could have postseason implications. The Musketeers trail the Friars by one point in the standings currently as PC picked up a draw against DePaul on Thursday to create the separation. Xavier’s Samantha Dewey is one of the most potent scorers in the BIG EAST, becoming the first player to score against Georgetown in nearly a month and owning a league-high 12 goals. She’ll be facing one of the stingiest goalkeepers in the country in Shelby Hogan. Hogan’s .861 save percentage leads the BIG EAST, while her 0.80 goals against average is tops among BIG EAST goalies with at least 10 appearances this year.
