Last Night In #BEfútbol – Hoyas Earn 1-0 Win Over Defending NCAA Champs
NEW YORK – The 12th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas extended their winning streak to three with 1-0 victory over crosstown rival No. 25 Maryland in Monday night primetime futbol action on FS1. A second half goal improved the Hoyas to 10-1-1 on the year, while the No. 25 Terps fell to 6-4-2 on the season.
The BIG EAST is 5-4-2 (.545) against teams in the United Soccer Coaches Poll Top 25 this year. Overall, the BIG EAST posts a 50-21-3 (.696) against non-conference teams. With the Hoya win over the Terps, the BIG EAST is 4-3-0 against Big ten foes. Georgetown is the third BIG EAST team to play Maryland this year, Villanova and St. John’s both lost one-goal nail-biters.
Also on Monday, the first NCAA RPI was released. BIG EAST men’s soccer was ranked second in the RPI, just behind the ACC. All 10 teams are ranked in the top 100 of the RPI. St. John’s was No. 2 in the RPI behind Virginia. Georgetown checked in at No. 5. In the top 50, Butler was ranked 33rd, DePaul 35th, Villanova 42nd and Providence 48th. Creighton is next at No. 57, Seton Hall No. 58, Xavier No. 74 and Marquette No. 98.
There is one non-conference game on Tuesday, Villanova plays at La Salle at 7 p.m. ET. Two games are on the schedule for Wednesday, Butler at Lipscomb at 5 p.m. and Seton Hall at Hofstra at 7 p.m.

The first chance of the game was Maryland’s as GU freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero pushed the ball over the crossbar. Moments later, the Hoyas had an opportunity on a corner kick as Daniel Wu’s shot went high. Romero had two saves in the win to get the shutout, Neumann had four saves and took the loss as the Terp defense was credited with a pair of saves. This was Georgetown’s fourth-straight shutout and the seventh of the season. In the 61st minute, a shot from the left side by freshman Will Sands was cleared off the line by Matt Di Rosa prompting a video review to confirm it did not cross the goal line. The goal came in the 65th minute as a move from Zach Riviere broke it open at midfield. He found Paul Rothrock on the left side who crossed it in before Achara redirected the ball to Derek Dodson who buried it to make it 1-0.Georgetown outshot Maryland 16-5 and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
