Midweek #BEfútbol Roundup
NEW YORK – BIG EAST men’s soccer continues to go unbeaten in non-league action with another two wins this week. Butler defeated Lipscomb 2-1 on the road in Nashville and Villanova defeated La Salle on Tuesday night, 2-1. On Monday, Georgetown defeated Maryland 1-0. The BIG EAST has not lost a non-conference game since Oct. 1. Since then, the BIG EAS T has won 10 consecutive non-league contests.
Seton Hall’s match against Hofstra was cancelled due to rain and field conditions.
All 10 teams are back in action for a full Saturday of league play. No. 7 St. John’s will look to defend its unbeaten BIG EAST record against Creighton in the 8 p.m. finale. Games start at 1 p.m. with Butler at Seton Hall, Xavier at No. 13 Georgetown and Marquette at Villanova. At 4 p.m. DePaul will host Providence. Three of the games will be on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi.
BUTLER 2, Lipscomb 1 (OT)
Another game-winner from freshman Wilmer Cabrera, Jr., gave the Bulldogs a hard-fought road win Wednesday night at Lipscomb. The golden goal came in the 98th minute. The Bulldogs are now 7-4-1 on the season, while Lipscomb, which advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, now stands at 3-7-1. The Bulldogs out-shot Lipscomb, 13-9, in the contest. Butler is undefeated in four straight matches, posting a 3-0-1 record so far in October. The Bulldogs are 2-1-1 in overtime matches in 2019. VILLANOVA 2, La Salle 1
Down a man in a tie game in the final 20 minutes on Tuesday night at McCarthy Stadium, Villanova needed a boost. Wildcat redshirt forward Seidu Shamsudeen stepped forward in the 88th minute to provide it. Shamsudeen took a feed from freshman Anthony Dragisics and knocked it into the net at 87:29 to lift Villanova to a 2-1 victory over La Salle here. The win clinched a share of the Philly Soccer Six title for the Wildcats (8-4-1 overall, 1-2-1 BIG EAST). It was an uphill battle for the Wildcats, who fell behind by a goal at 29:39 when Isak Sedin scored for the Explorers. La Salle had enjoyed the better of the play to that point. Villanova answered quickly though. Freshman Lyam MacKinnon drew a foul inside the 18 yard box and Theo Quartey converted the penalty kick at 30:45 to level matters.
