NEW YORK –  Three BIG EAST field hockey teams clinched playoff berths yesterday. Connecticut, Liberty and Old Dominion will make up three of the four  teams to make up the 2019 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship Presented by Jeep. The tournament will be hosted by Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., Nov. 8 and Nov. 10.
 
No. 3 Connecticut (5-0) shut out Villanova (1-4), 7-0. No. 17 Liberty (4-1) did the same to Georgetown (1-4), 4-0. No. 19 Old Dominion defeated Temple (1-4), 2-1 and No. 25 Providence (3-2) and Quinnipiac (1-4) finished regulation and two overtimes tied a 2-2. For the second time in league play for both the Friars and Bobcats, the game went to a shootout. Providence won in the shootout.
 
Six of the eight BIG EAST teams will play on Sunday in non-conference action.
 
No. 17 LIBERTY 4, GEORGETOWN 0
No. 17 Liberty earned a 4-0 shutout victory at Georgetown on Friday afternoon at Cooper Field, its sixth shutout of the 2019 campaign. Liberty freshman forward Daniella Rhodes scored three goals in the winning effort, and junior Jill Bolton added a goal. Sophomore Alivia Klopp added two assists. The Lady Flames' Allison Schaefer recorded her program-record 38th career victory in goal and also notched her 15th career shutout.
 
No. 3 CONNECTICUT 7, VILLANOVA 0
UConn notched its third straight shutout as the Huskies beat Villanova, 7-0, Friday afternoon. Five of UConn's seven goals were scored by backs as each of the Huskies' starting defenders notched at least one goal. Senior Antonia Tiedtke scored once while adding three assists. Junior Kourtney Kennedy, sophomore Abby Gooderham, sophomore Lindsay Dickinson, freshman Claire Jandewerth, senior Svea Boker and junior Jessica Dembrowski each scored vs. Villanova. Redshirt sophomore Cheyenne Sprecher and the UConn defense hasn't allowed a goal in 212:13. The Huskies outshot the Wildcats 18-5 and didn't allow a Villanova shot in the second half. UConn also had an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners.
 
No. 19 OLD DOMINION 2, TEMPLE 1
ODU netted the game’s first goal in the 19th minute of action, as senior Erin Huffman redirected a shot from classmate Rebecca Birch past Temple’s Cristina Carotenuto to give the Monarchs the first lead of the evening.  The Owls responded with a goal of their own five minutes later, as junior Dani Batze shot one past Monarch goalkeeper Cam MacGillivray off of a penalty corner opportunity. Sophomores Claire Thomas and Nienke Oerlemans each earned the assist on the play. Going into the half, the two teams were deadlocked at one goal apiece, though ODU had the upper hand in shots (8-2) and penalty corners (6-2). With less than a minute left in the third quarter, Birch netted a goal of her own off of a Monarch penalty corner, which was inserted by sophomore Riley Taylor and settled by junior Marlee McClendon to give her team a one-goal lead. The goal was Birch’s team-leading eighth of the season, and proved to be the game-winner as both teams were held scoreless in the game’s final frame, giving ODU the 2-1 victory.
 
No. 25 PROVIDENCE 3, QUINNIPIAC 2 (2OT, SO)
Niamh Gowing  intercepted a Quinnipiac pass and found Izzy Mendez for a goal to put the Friars up 1-0 at the 8:08 mark of the first quarter. It was Mendez's team-leading ninth goal of the season. Quinnipiac evened the score in the second quarter as Amanda Blum picked up a turnover deep in the Friars' defensive zone and took goalkeeper Lydia Rice one-on-one for the unassisted goal at 29:29. Quinnipiac took the lead (2-1) in the fourth quarter at 48:59 as Julianna Capello found Valerie Perkins at the left post for the score. Providence College senior Allyson Parker tied the game just under a minute later as she converted a penalty-stroke opportunity. Quinnipiac keeper Mack Vorel made five saves.  Providence’s Lydia Rice made two.  Parker scored the game-winning shootout goal.
