NEW YORK – Midweek BIG EAST volleyball action saw No. 10 Marquette win in four sets at Xavier and Butler win a thrilling five-set match over DePaul at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Marquette’s win propels the Golden Eagles to a 4-0 BIG EAST start, while Butler moves to 1-1 in conference action.
BIG EAST volleyball action continues this weekend with four matches apiece on Friday and Saturday as travel partners Butler and Xavier visit Georgetown and Villanova, while No. 14 Creighton and Providence meet St. John’s and Seton Hall.
Marquette 3, Xavier 1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-23, 25-16)
Tenth-ranked Marquette (14-2, 4-0 BIG EAST) moved to 4-0 in BIG EAST action with a 3-1 road win this at Xavier on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Eagles won the first set in dominant fashion, hitting at a blistering .682 percent. Xavier (4-9, 1-1) took the second set, but Marquette prevailed in sets three and four to take the match. Three different Golden Eagles recorded double-doubles in the win with sophomore Claire Mosher dishing out a career-best 23 assists and collecting a career-high 15 digs. Martha Konovodoff earned her second career double-double with 20 digs and a career-high-tying 10 assists. Allie Barber, reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, led the Marquette attack with 16 kills. For the Musketeers, Norah Painter led the way with 13 kills, three digs and a solo block. MaryAnn O’Toole and Madi Kutruff recorded double digit digs with 17 and 16, respectively.

Butler 3, DePaul 2 (17-25, 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 15-12)
Butler (4-10, 1-1) picked up its first BIG EAST win of 2019 with a grueling five-set match over DePaul (9-7, 1-3) at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs dropped sets one and four but climbed back in set five from a 9-3 deficit to clinch the match 15-12. Anna Logan led the gritty Butler attack with 15 kills and 13 digs for a double-double, while Shay Horn chipped in 11 kills of her own. Megan Ramsemeyer spread the wealth with 39 assists and 13 digs. On the defensive end, Melody Davidson was a force at the net with 11 total blocks, the most of any player in a conference match this season. Libero Elizabeth LaBue led the Bulldogs with a team-high three aces and 22 digs. For DePaul, Brittany Maxwell had a match-high 19 kills while teammate Emma Price chipped in 13 kills. Isabelle Banez collected 30 digs in the back row. The junior libero leads the BIG EAST in digs per set and total digs.
