Pair of Divers Earn Weekly #BIGEASTswim Honors

NEW YORK – Georgetown divers Riley Fujioka and Joseph Hofman have been selected as this week’s BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Female and Male Athletes of the Week, respectively. Both competitors swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at their meet during the past week.
 
The Hoyas topped American with the men capturing a 139-42 victory while the women came out on top 125-63. Providence men and women fell to Bryant over the weekend, while the Seton Hall squads defeated Montclair State and Monmouth at home. Xavier took part in the Akron Zips Classic where both teams finished third, while Butler women beat Bellarmine 152-110 on Friday before finishing fourth in the Indiana Intercollegiate meet behind Purdue, Ball State and Franklin.
 
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Riley Fujioka, Georgetown, Jr., Diving (Los Altos, Calif.)
Fujioka was the top finisher in both diving events in a 125-63 win over American. The junior nearly broke her own school record in the 1-meter dive, scoring a 278.33 to win the event and also qualify for NCAA Zone Championships. Fujioka scored a 250.05 to edge out two of her teammates to win the 3-meter dive. The senior’s performance places her scores at 12th and 30th in the nation, respectively.

BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Joseph Hofman, Georgetown, Fr., Diving (Everett, Wash.)
Hofman was victorious on both boards against American. His mark of 268.13 earned the Hoyas nine points en route to a lopsided 139-42 victory. Hofman also won the 3-meter event, totaling 238.73 points to oust teammate Griffin Edmonds who earned second with 232.95. The freshman holds the 15th best score in the nation on the 1-meter board, while his 3-meter mark checks in at 34th.

Notable Performances
Justin Viotto, Providence, So., Free/Fly
In Saturday’s meet against Bryant, sophomore Justin Viotto paced the Friars with 15 points. Viotto was first to the wall in the 1000 yard freestyle (9:58.75). The sophomore also placed second in the 200 yard butterfly (1:57.07), 500 yard freestyle (4:48.13), and the 200 yard freestyle relay (22.83 split).

Jon Bernard, Xavier, Fr., Back/Breast/IM
Bernard was the Musketeers’ top point scorer at the two-day Akron Zip Invitational, collecting three top-three finishes including an event win in the 200 IM. The Musketeers finished third as a team.
Bernard collected the win on Friday evening in his first individual event, setting a time of 1:53.23, the second fastest time in the BIG EAST so far this season.
 
Allie Carmichael, Butler, Fr., Breast/IM
Carmichael shined in the Bulldogs’ win over Bellarmine last Friday. The rookie claimed three individual event wins to lead Butler to a 152-110 victory. Carmichael won the 100 Breast with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 1:09.64. before winning the 200 Breast with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:29.50. The Carmel, Ind., native closed out a spectacular performance with a win in the 400 IM with a time of 4:44.81.
