#BEfútbol Minute – Creighton, Georgetown, St. John’s Test Unbeaten League Record In Week 3
NEW YORK – Georgetown, Creighton and St. John’s remain on the top of the BIG EAST men’s soccer leaderboard with victories over Providence, Villanova and Butler, respectively last week. Seton Hall earned its first league win of the season with a 2-1 win over DePaul at the newly-renovated Owen. T. Carroll Field. Marquette defeated Xavier, 2-1, on Friday. All five games last week were one-goal contests.
Currently No. 2 Georgetown, No. 9 St. John’s and Creighton are 2-0-0 in BIG EAST action. Providence, Marquette and Seton Hall are 1-1-0. Villanova and DePaul are 0-1-1 and Xavier and Butler are 0-2-0.
What To Expect In Week 3
All 10 teams will play on Friday with a pair of opening games at 3 p.m. to start the day. DePaul will host No. 5 Georgetown, while Villanova hosts Xavier. Next up, Seton Hall will host Creighton, the Pirates’ second game at Owen T. Carroll Field for the season. The Pirates-Bluejays contest at 6 p.m. ET is the first of three contests on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi. At 7 p.m., Providence hosts Butler also on BEDN. And the final of the three BEDN games will be at 8 p.m. as Marquette hosts No. 12 St. John’s.

No. 5 Georgetown at DePaul (3 p.m. ET, Friday)
The Hoyas (7-1-0, 2-0-0 BIG EAST) are coming off a 2-1 win over Providence last week, while DePaul is coming off a close 1-0 loss to Notre Dame on Tuesday. The Blue Demons (4-5-1, 0-1-1 BE) are looking for their first league win of the season after a tie with Villanova in the first weekend and a 2-1 loss to Seton Hall last weekend. Georgetown leads the all-time series 8-1-1, 4-0-0 on the road. Last year, Georgetown won 2-1 in overtime as Achara scored the game winner in the 95th minute. The last meeting in Chicago was a 2-1 Hoya victory during the 2017 season. Derek Dodson leads the Hoyas in scoring this season with 11 points (3G, 5A). For DePaul Max De Bruijne is the team-leader with seven points (2G, 3A).
Xavier at Villanova (3 p.m. ET, Friday)
Both Villanova and Xavier are looking for their first points in the BIG EAST standings. Villanova is 5-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 BIG EAST. VU dropped a 1-0 decision at Creighton Saturday night in its most recent action. The Wildcats returns to Higgins Soccer Complex, where they are unbeaten at 4-0 thus far in 2019 and have yet to concede a goal. Xavier (4-4-1, 0-2-0) has lost close matches to then-No. 9 St. John’s, 3-1, in the league opener on the road and 2-1 to Marquette at home last weekend. Xavier leads the all-time series 4-1-1. The last three meetings are 1-1-1 with a 1-0 win by Xavier last year, a 2-1 win by Villanova in 2017 and a 2-2 double overtime tie in 2016. Xavier is coming of a 1-0 loss to Western Michigan on Tuesday at home. Villanova’s Lyam Mackinnon leads the Wildcats in scoring with eight points (2G, 4A). In goal, Carson Williams has a 0.32 goals against average. For Xavier, Samson Sergi leads the team with 11 points (5G, 1A).
Creighton at Seton Hall (6 p.m. ET, Friday - BEDN)
Creighton (6-2-1, 2-0-0 BE) are on a hot streak traveling to New Jersey for Friday’s match with a four-game winning streak. Luke Haakenson leads Creighton with four goals after a two-goal performance last week against Tulsa. Stephen Elias paces Seton Hall with four goals as the team averages 1.86 goals per match as the Pirates are 3-4-0 and 1-1-0 in BIG EAST play. Creighton leads the all-time series against Seton Hall, 4-2-0. Seton Hall leads the series in New Jersey, 2-1-0. Creighton’s only road victory against Seton Hall came in 2015 (4-2). The Bluejays won 1-0 last season in Omaha.
Butler at Providence (7 p.m. ET, Friday - BEDN)
Butler’s game at Providence is the Bulldogs’ first road trip in BIG EAST play. Butler (4-4-0, 0-2-0 BE) is still looking for its first win in conference play after playing two of the top three teams in the current standings, St. John’s and Georgetown. The Bulldogs last three games were against teams in the United Soccer Coaches. Butler went 1-2-0 with a key win over then-No. 5 Indiana. Brandon Guhl leads Butler in points (8) and goals (4). Providence (6-3-0, 1-1-0 BE) defeated Seton Hall 1-0 to open BIG EAST play but lost 2-1 to Georgetown last weekend. The loss to Georgetown ended the Friars previous four-game winning streak that went from Sept. 14 through Sept. 25. Providence is led by three players with seven points, Andualem Chisolm leads PC in goals with three. Butler owns a 4-2-1 advantage in the all-time series with Providence., 2-1-0 in Rhode Island.
No. 12 St. John’s at Marquette (8 p.m. ET, Friday - BEDN)
The Red Storm is looking to make a 3-0-0 start to BIG EAST play for the first time in 15 years. St. John’s, ranked 12th nationally, has a 8-1-0 overall record, 2-0-0 in league play. SJU’s 8-1-0 marks the program’s best record through nine games since 2008, when the Johnnies started the season 7-0-2 with the two draws coming against No. 2 Boston College and No. 3 Notre Dame. That year, St. John’s went on to finish 19-3-3 and make its fourth appearance all-time in the College Cup. Niko Petridis leads St. John’s in scoring with 11 points (4G, 3A). Marquette is 1-1-0 in league play, 4-4-1 overall. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 6-2 Tuesday loss to Saint Louis after a 2-1 come-from-behind victory last Friday at Xavier. Marquette has a successful series history over St. John’s with a 4-0-3 record. Three of the last six outings featuring St. John’s and Marquette have ended in scoreless draws. The Golden Eagles have a strong freshman class as two of this week’s league honorees are rookie Golden Eagles in goalie Jackson Weyman and forward Christian Marquez. Senior Josh Coan leads MU in scoring with 11 points (5G, 1A).
Eight Teams Earn Academic Awards
On Thursday, the United Soccer Coaches Association announced the Team Academic Award winners to recognize exemplary performance in the classroom during the 2018-19 academic year. A total of 992 college teams (345 men, 647 women) earned the Team Academic Award, including 257 schools who had both their men’s and women’s programs among the recipients. Eight BIG EAST teams were recognized:

- Creighton, 3.32 (2003-04, 2008-12, 2014-19)
- DePaul, 3.33 (2003, 2005, 2006, 2008-19)

Midweek Roundup
BIG EAST teams went 0-3 in non-conference action on Tuesday. Western Michigan edged Xavier, 1-0, and Notre Dame just got by DePaul by the same score. Saint Louis defeated Marquette 6-2. Notre Dame scored in the 90th minute. DePaul keeper Drew Nuelle made three saves. Western Michigan also scored toward the end of the match, in the 72nd minute. Musketeer keeper Matthew Rosenberg made five saves in the loss. This week, seven teams will play on Tuesday against non-league opponents. Creighton’s match against Green Bay scheduled for Tuesday in Omaha was canceled because of inclement weather.
