NEW YORK – St. John’s is alone on top of the men’s soccer league leaderboard as the Red Storm delivered a 4-0 shutout victory at Marquette on Friday night.  With the win, the Red Storm improved to 3-0-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time since 2004.  The Johnnies' 9-1-0 record marks the program's best start through 10 games since the 2008 team went 8-0-2 en route to a 19-3-3 finish and a spot in the College Cup.

Georgetown and DePaul played to a scoreless draw to start the afternoon in Chicago. Georgetown is second in the standings with seven points. Seton Hall gave Creighton its first loss of the season, 1-0, in South Orange. The Pirates and Bluejays are tied for third place with six points. Villanova defeated Xavier 1-0 for the Wildcats’ first BIG EAST win of the season. Butler also earned its first league win with a 3-1 road win at Providence.

Seven teams are in action on Tuesday for non-conference contests.

No. 5 GEORGETOWN 0, DEPAUL 0 (2OT)
Georgetown outshot DePaul 24-8 with eight shots on goal to the Blue Demons' two. The Hoyas took 15 corner kicks to DePaul's two. Hoya freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero had two saves in the game, while DePaul’s Drew Nuelle managed eight.  With the draw, the Hoyas moved to 7-1-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, while DePaul went to 4-5-2 on the year and 0-1-2 in league games.

 Villanova 1, XAVIER 0
Another tight defensive battle was decided in the 80th minute as Villanova junior Theo Quartey scored his first goal of the season to help carry Villanova (6-3-1 overall, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) to a 1-0 victory over Xavier (4-5-1 overall, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) on a windy afternoon at the Higgins Soccer Complex. The Wildcats have yet to concede a goal at home this season, and they extended their record to 5-0 on the artificial surface on the west side of Villanova's campus. Goalkeeper Carson Williams made five saves in posting his seventh shutout in 10 outings this season. On the afternoon, Villanova owned a 15-10 edge in shots and 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.

SETON HALL 1, CREIGHTON 0
Seton Hall extended its current winning streak to three games with a 1-0 victory over Creighton at Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday night. Seton Hall senior Carlton McKenzie's goal scored on a close-range header in the 32nd minute. The goal would end up being the game-winner. The Hall (4-4-0, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) has now won its last three matches, the program's longest win streak since rattling off three in a row between Sept. 4 and Sept. 10 in 2017. The Bluejays fell to 2-1-0 in league play and 6-3-1 overall. Creighton ended the match with a 12-7 edge in shots, including 7-2 in the second half. The Bluejays attempted the final six shots of the match. Creighton is now 1-3 at Seton Hall.

BUTLER 3, PROVIDENCE 1
The first two goals of Brendan Hicks' Butler career propelled the Bulldogs to a 3-1 win Friday night at Providence. The win serves as Butler's first BIG EAST win over 2019, as the Bulldogs improve to 5-4 overall. Providence (6-4, 1-2 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute as Joao Serrano curved in a low corner kick that snuck just inside the near post. The first of Hicks' two goals came in the 48th minute. Wilmer Cabrera, Jr.'s third goal of the season proved to be his third game-winner of the season. In the 60th minute, Alex Lehtinen sent a cross to him on the right side of the box. Cabrera, Jr., was able to settle it and fire a shot with his right foot that got by Aviza. Hicks provided an insurance goal in the 71st minute. Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji made eight saves, one shy of his career-high. Seven came in the second half.

No. 12 St. John’s 4,  Marquette 0
St. John's win snapped a seven-game winless streak against the Golden Eagles (4-5-1, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) that dated back to 2010.  Prior to Friday's four-goal explosion, the Red Storm had not found the back of the net against Marquette since 2010. Rafael Bustamante and Atila Ashrafi scored their first career collegiate goals on Friday night.  Bustamante netted the game-winner in the 35th before Ashrafi bumped the lead to two 20 minutes later. Tani Oluwaseyi registered his first career brace with a pair of late insurance goals, scoring in the 62nd and 88th minutes.  Oluwaseyi bumped his goal total to six on the season, good enough for both the team and conference lead. Jan Hoffelner and Luka Gavran tallied two saves apiece to log the team's sixth clean sheet of the season.  Hoffelner started the contest and improved to 4-0-0 on the season.
