NEW YORK –  Connecticut went 1-1 this weekend with a shutout win over Temple in league action on Friday, but lost 2-0 against No. 4 Maryland on Sunday. Keeper Cheyenne Sprecher made eight saves, including seven in the second half. Both of the Terps’ goals came in the second quarter off deflections. The Huskies remain at the top of the BIG EAST field hockey standings at 3-0, tied for the league lead with No. 13 Liberty. The Lady Flames defeated Quinnipiac 5-1 in BIG EAST action on Friday, but lost in overtime to No. 19 Harvard on Sunday.
 
Providence is currently on a two game winning streak with victories over Villanova, 3-1, and Dartmouth, 5-1. The Friars are currently tied for third in the BIG EAST standings at 2-1 with No. 22 Old Dominion. Like Connecticut and Liberty, the Monarchs won in BIG EAST action Friday with a 3-0 win over Georgetown, but lost in overtime to No. 8 Virginia on Sunday. It was the second time Virginia and Old Dominion played this season.
 
Also in Sunday’s non-conference action, Villanova defeated Bucknell, 3-2, in the third overtime contest of the day.  Villanova’s Abby Siana scored the golden goal in the 68th minute, assisted by Emma McLaughlin. It was her third goal of the season. Quinnipiac lost to No. 17 Boston College, 4-0 and Georgetown lost to William & Mary, 7-2.

No. 13 LIBERTY 5, QUINNIPIAC 1
LIberty used a barrage of first half goals to defeat Quinnipiac, 5-1, in BIG EAST action, Friday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium. Liberty sophomore Charlotte Vaanhold led the way with a pair of goals in the win. Daniella Rhodes, Maddie Hosler and Jill Bolton also scored in the game. Bolton added a pair of assists for a game-high and season-high four points.
 
No. 3 CONNECTICUT 5, TEMPLE 0
Junior Jessica Dembrowski scored twice as the No. 3 UConn defeated Temple. Freshman McKenna Sergi had her first career start and goal vs. Temple. Senior Svea Boker and sophomore Abby Gooderham each scored against the Owls. Gooderham and freshman Sophie Hamilton each had three assists. Dembrowski notched the first goal at 11:36 off assists from Hamilton and Gooderham. Sergi scored her goal at 17:11. UConn redshirt sophomore Cheyenne Sprecher notched her sixth shutout of the season against Temple.

PROVIDENCE 3, VILLANOVA 1
Amanda Collins got the Friars on the board at the 7:11 mark of the first quarter as she tallied her first goal of the season. She tipped in a feed from Izzy Mendez at the left post during a penalty corner. The Wildcats tied the score in the second quarter, on what proved to be Villanova's only shot on goal in the game. Emily Clarke found the back of the cage after the Wildcats extended a penalty corner opportunity. She was assisted by Riley Dolan. Niamh Gowing put the Friars ahead, 2-1, on her third goal of the season at 33:14. She collected a rebound off an initial shot and sent it across the goal line with a reverse stick. Maddie Babineau gave the Friars an insurance goal at 48:12 as she converted her first tally of the season during a penalty corner. She was assisted by Corinne Kenney.
 
No. 22 OLD DOMINION 3, GEORGETOWN 0
Old Dominion returned home for the first time in five games and shut out Georgetown, 3-0, at the L. R. Hill Sports Complex on Friday night. Senior Rebecca Birch led the way for the Monarchs, as she was involved in all three goals ODU posted on the evening. The Monarchs scored in the 11th, 24th and 53rd minutes. Rebecca Birch scored the first two goals and assisted the third. This was Birch’s second multi-goal came of the season, and her five points on the night was the most she’s had in a game in 2019. Gerogetown’s Ciara Weets made 10 saves.
