Providence Earns Two #BIGEASTfh Weekly Awards After 2-0 Week
NEW YORK – Coming off a 2-0 week, Providence takes home two of the BIG EAST field hockey weekly awards as Amanda Collins is named Defensive Player of the Week and Niamh Gowing earns Freshman of the Week. Liberty junior forward Jill Bolton was named Offensive Player of the Week.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Jill Bolton, Liberty, Jr., F (Souderton, Pa.)
Liberty junior forward Jill Bolton recorded six points on two goals and two assists. Bolton took just five shots on goal. Bolton scored in the 58th minute against Quinnipiac to give the Lady Flames their fifth goal in a 5-1 win. The forward also added a pair of assists in first half goals. Boston scored Liberty’s only goal in the ninth minute of a 2-1 overtime loss at No. 19 Harvard on Sunday. Bolton has six goals and four assists for the year for 16 points.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Amanda Collins, Providence, So., D (San Diego, Calif.)
Providence sophomore Amanda Collins helped anchor a Friar defense that allowed just six shots on goal and two goals in a 2-0 week. Collins also paced Providence on the offensive end of the field, recording a team-best five points on two goals and one assist. On Friday, in a 3-1 BIG EAST win over Villanova, Collins recorded her first goal of the season. She closed out the weekend with a single-game career high of three points (1G, 1A) in a 5-1 victory over Dartmouth. She only took two shot and scored on both.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Niamh Gowing, Providence, So., F (Dublin, Ireland)
Providence forward Niamh Gowing was credited with the game-winning goal in each of the Friars’ matches last week. Gowing scored the go-ahead goal in a 3-1 victory over Villanova on Friday night to break the 1-1 tie in the third quarter. On Sunday, in a 5-1 win over Dartmouth, she netted the first goal of contest two minutes into the game.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Erin Huffman, Old Dominion, Sr., F
Huffman scored two goals and collected four points last week. In ODU’s BIG EAST foe Georgetown, Huffman scored a goal on a season-high 10 shots. She also netted a shot in the Monarchs’ 3-2 overtime loss against No. 8 Virginia.
Rebecca Birch, Old Dominion, Sr., B
Birch led the Old Dominion defense to a 3-0 shutout win over Georgetown on Friday as the Monarchs held the Hoyas to just four shots. Offensively, Birch netted two goals and assisted the third tally in the win.
Lydia Sydnor, Villanova, Sr., F
Sydnor scored a goal in the Wildcats’ 3-2 overtime victory over Bucknell. It was her ninth goal of the season.
