No. 1 Seed Connecticut Wins Eighth Straight #BIGEASTfh Championship Title

HAMDEN, Conn. –
Top-seed Connecticut captured its eighth-straight title in the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship presented by Jeep with a 2-0 win against No. 18 Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium.
 
The NCAA committee will announce the tournament selections during the Selection Show on NCAA.com at 10 p.m. ET on Sunday.
 
BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player Svea Boker scored a pair of third quarter goals to lift the Huskies to its 18th championship title. Boker’s eventual game-winning goal came in the 37th minute. Her insurance goal came a minute later.
 
It was the sixth time this season that the senior tallied multiple goals in a contest. The BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year has totaled a team-high 20 goals on the year.
 
Husky goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher recorded her second shutout of the tournament and her ninth of the season to record BIG EAST All-Tournament team status. Sprecher was joined by Boker, Sophie Hamilton, Antonia Tiedtke and Maddy Wray.
 
With the win, the Huskies earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 31st time in program history and 18th straight.
 
Old Dominion keeper Camilla MacGillivray went 1-1 in the tournament made six saves against Connecticut and had a 0-0 tie going into the break. MacGillivray and the ODU defense did not allow UConn to score on any of their five corner attempts. MacGillivray had two saves in the semifinal win over Liberty, which helped earn BIG EAST all-tournament team recognition along with her teammates Rebecca Birch, Marlee McClendon and Nicole Fredricks.
 
Connecticut (18-3) outshot Old Dominion (11-7) 12-6, 8-6 in shots on goal. UConn had five corners to Old Dominion’s 3. Connecticut is currently ranked third in the country, Old Dominion is 18th.
